Title:              Director of Development

Reports To:   Executive Director

Location:       Fairlee, Vermont (with hybrid flexibility and 20% travel)

Status:            Full-Time, Exempt

 

Position Summary

The Director of Development is responsible for designing, implementing, and managing a comprehensive development strategy to support the Aloha Foundation’s mission and programs. This individual will lead efforts in donor cultivation, major gifts, planned giving, annual appeals, corporate and foundation partnerships, and special events. The Director will work closely with the Executive Director, Board of Trustees, and the entire Aloha community to foster a culture of philanthropy and ensure that fundraising goals are met.

The ideal candidate will be a strategic thinker and passionate storyteller who can build connections, inspire generosity, and advance the Foundation’s commitment to serving a diverse and inclusive community.

 

Key Responsibilities

Development Strategy and Leadership:

  • Develop and execute a comprehensive fundraising plan, including major gifts, annual fund, planned giving, capital campaigns, and corporate partnerships.
  • Set annual and long-term fundraising goals in alignment with the Foundation’s strategic priorities.
  • Provide mentorship and support to staff and volunteers engaged in fundraising efforts. Supervise the Development and Database manager.
  • Collaborate with the Executive Director and Board of Trustees to cultivate, steward, and solicit major donors.

Donor Cultivation and Stewardship:

  • Build and maintain meaningful relationships with donors, alumni, and community members. 
  • Identify and cultivate new donor prospects, with a focus on expanding the Foundation’s donor base.
  • Develop personalized stewardship plans to ensure donors feel connected to the Aloha mission and community.
  • Manage donor recognition programs and events, fostering a culture of gratitude and engagement.

Fundraising Campaigns and Events:

  • Lead the planning and execution of all fundraising campaigns, including the annual fund, major gift initiatives, grants, endowment reports, and special projects.
  • Oversee the design and management of fundraising events, including reunions, visiting weekend and opening day events, and other community gatherings.
  • Collaborate with the communications and marketing teams to create compelling fundraising materials including but not limited to direct mail, social media and email.

Data Management and Reporting:

  • Maintain accurate donor records and ensure best practices in donor database management.
  • Prepare regular dashboard reports on fundraising progress for the Executive Director and Board of Trustees.
  • Utilize data to inform development strategies, track trends, and measure success.

 

Requirements - Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills, Abilities

  • Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree or fundraising certification (CFRE) is a plus.
  • 5+ years of experience in nonprofit fundraising, with a proven track record of success in major gift solicitation and campaign management.
  • Strong relationship-building and interpersonal skills, with a commitment to fostering an inclusive and welcoming community.
  • Excellent communication skills, including written, verbal, and presentation abilities.
  • Familiarity with donor management systems (preferably Raiser’s Edge) and best practices in data management.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a mission-driven environment.
  • Passion for the Aloha Foundation’s mission and programs, and a deep commitment to equity, inclusion, and belonging.

 

Preferred Qualities

  • Experience in comprehensive campaign planning and execution.
  • Knowledge of or personal connection to summer camp culture and its impact on personal development.
  • Familiarity with the philanthropic community in Vermont and New England.
  • Experience in leading a development team or managing volunteers.

 

Compensation and Benefits

The Aloha Foundation offers a salary range of 85,000-$90,000/ year and generous benefits package, including health insurance, retirement contribution, professional development opportunities, and paid time off.
