Job Description 

Summary/objective

The Museum Registrar has primary responsibility for managing a collection of over 4,000 works of art.

Essential functions

Maintains collections management database containing all pertinent information regarding objects in the permanent and campus collections. Other core duties include:

  • Accessions new acquisitions
  • Responsible for working with photographer to obtain high resolution photography of objects in the collection
  • Researches exhibition & publication history and provenance of acquisitions
  • Researches artist bibliography & artist biographical information pertaining to acquisitions
  • Researches conservation/condition history of acquisitions
  • Performs selective research on estimated values
  • Tracks and records location changes as exhibitions change, and annually
  • Manages campus artwork loan program including processing and fulfilling requests.

 

  • Responsible for developing and updating Emergency Preparedness Plan
  • Responsible for processing annual insurance agreement and any insurance claims
  • Coordinates logistics for all outgoing loan requests once approved by Director
  • Performs condition reports for all loans, both incoming and outgoing
  • Coordinates all conservation projects
  • Develops and manages fee-based traveling loan exhibitions from the collection
  • Periodically teaches collections management as well as occasional curatorial seminars as part of the Museum and Heritage Studies curriculum at Randolph College

 

Competencies

Supervisory responsibilities

Occasional interns focused on collections and archive management

Work environment

Typically working in a normal office environment around other people. Evening and weekend work is sometimes required.

Physical demands

May be sitting for extended periods of time. Must be able to lift up to 20 lbs.

Required education and experience

BA and experience working in collections management databases.

Preferred education and experience

MA and teaching experience

Work authorization/security clearance requirements

Campus security issues this position a unique and confidential access code used to arm and disarm the museum, and two different keys: one for main access to museum, the other for interior locks.
