Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC) offers an engaging slate of staff-led outdoor experiences for the youth, adults, and families, which promote appreciation, understanding, enjoyment, and responsible use of natural resources. We provide people of all ages and backgrounds with the skills to enjoy the outdoors and an increased understanding of their connection to the natural world.
The Bay Circuit Trail is a 230+ mile trail in Greater Boston which links together local parks, green spaces, preserves, and rail trails into one vast regional network. The BCT can be hiked or biked from end to end and acts as an important resource for outdoor recreation and community. To help build this community and to engage new trail users, AMC is looking for a BCT Outreach Assistant.
The Outreach Assistant will report to the BCT Coordinator and will run an event series of guided bike rides and hikes (30%), manage all BCT social media channels and public inquiries (30%), conduct accessibility assessments of the BCT (15%), and assist the BCT Coordinator in GIS mapping projects, trail projects and programming, and trail maintenance (15%). The position requires availability on many weekends and evenings and the ability to commute to the trail. The position is hybrid, 25 hours/week, and has a flexible schedule that can be discussed.
What You Will Be Doing at AMC
- Organize, promote, and lead guided hikes and bike rides on the Bay Circuit Trail for youth, adults, families, community groups etc. The emphasis will be on mountain and road biking events across the BCT and it’s intersecting trails.
- Develop an interesting and varied seasonal schedule of weekend hikes and rides, promote these opportunities, lead the events, track and increase engagement/attendance over the course of the season. A minimum of 6 events should take place during the season.
- Model Leave No Trace (LNT) ethics and responsible behavior in the outdoors
- Perform trip coordinator functions including communication with event attendees, co-workers, and ensure smooth program delivery
- Prepare brief reports after each event
- Manage Bay Circuit Trail social media channels in a professional capacity, and increase traffic on all sites (Instagram, Facebook, WordPress) by at least 50%
- Respond to questions from the public about the AMC and the BCT
- Collaborate with AMC’s Marketing & Communications Team
- Develop a regular posting schedule on socials and create a guide for social media management
- Conduct Accessibility Assessments on the Bay Circuit Trail and make these assessments accessible online
- Post at least 4 accessibility assessments on the Bay Circuit Website
- Support the BCT Coordinator in managing the Bay Circuit Trail & Greenway
- Assist the BCT Coordinator with volunteer events
- Conduct standard trail maintenance
- Help with GIS projects
- Other miscellaneous tasks related to BCT management
- Attend required trainings
- Trails Skills College at Camp Dodge in NH
- Wilderness First Aid & CPR (if applicant is not already certified)
- Outdoor Leadership Training
- Meet regularly with the BCT Coordinator and collaborate with other AMC Staff and partner organizations.
