The Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC) is seeking a dynamic, results-oriented and entrepreneurial mission-driven leader to serve as the Director of New York Growth. This role is responsible for expanding AMC’s presence, influence, and impact across the New York region, focusing on growing the New York Chapter’s membership, building strategic partnerships, and advocating for local conservation initiatives. The ideal candidate is a results-oriented collaborator passionate about the outdoors, community engagement, and conservation advocacy.

 

What You’ll Be Doing At AMC

  1. Membership Growth
    • Develop and execute strategies to increase AMC’s New York Chapter membership, engaging a diverse and inclusive audience of outdoor enthusiasts.
    • Foster relationships with existing and prospective members, creating opportunities for deeper involvement with AMC’s mission and activities.
  2. Financial Management and Sustainability
    • Conduct ongoing financial analysis and modeling to evaluate the short-term and long-term return on investment (ROI) of AMC’s efforts in the New York region.
    • Ensure all initiatives are mission-accretive and financially sustainable, making data-driven resource allocation and strategic planning recommendations.
  3. Partnership Development
    • Build and strengthen regional partnerships with other non-profits, government agencies, corporate brands, and community organizations.
    • Act as the primary point of contact for regional collaboration opportunities and identify new ways to amplify AMC’s impact through partnership efforts.
  4. Event Planning and Programming
    • Plan and oversee local events and programs, including outdoor activities, workshops, educational initiatives, and community gatherings that align with AMC’s mission.
    • Collaborate with the New York/New Jersey Chapter, and hire/lead AMC’s local Programming team of two to ensure high-quality, mission-relevant, engaging experiences for participants that lead to membership.
  5. Advocacy and Conservation Leadership
    • Support AMC’s advocacy efforts for local conservation issues, representing the organization in regional forums, coalitions, and public discussions.
    • Partner with AMC’s policy team to develop and implement campaigns to promote environmental stewardship and sustainable outdoor recreation practices in the New York area.
  6. Chapter and Leadership Support
    • Support the New York/New Jersey Chapter in cultivating and empowering local volunteer leaders.
    • Along with cross-departmental teams, provide guidance, resources, and training to help chapter leaders effectively carry out their roles and enhance member engagement.
  7. Collaboration with AMC Teams
    • Work closely with internal stakeholders, including AMC’s Marketing/Media, Communications, Development, Programming, Executive Team, and Board, to align regional efforts with organizational goals.
    • Contribute to developing and implementing strategic initiatives that support AMC’s growth and sustainability.

Qualifications

What AMC Is Looking For

  • Proven track record of success in community growth, partnership development, or stakeholder engagement, preferably within the non-profit, outdoor recreation, or environmental sectors.
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to inspire and mobilize diverse teams, stakeholders, and volunteers.
  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills, with experience working collaboratively across departments and organizations.
  • Passion for outdoor recreation, conservation, and environmental advocacy.
  • Experience in event planning, programming, and/or grassroots advocacy.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and prioritize effectively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Knowledge of the New York region, including its outdoor recreation opportunities and conservation challenges, is highly desirable.

 

Location
This position is based in New York, with regular travel required throughout the region and occasional travel to AMC’s other locations.

Salary:  $99,866 - $134,789

 

We are committed to equitable compensation practices. The initial salary represents our starting point, and our compensation philosophy is designed to reward and recognize the contributions of our employees as they grow within the organization. External candidates typically begin their journey with us at the starting point of the salary range. The final compensation offer will be based on factors such as experience, education, competencies, and geographic differential relevant to the position, and will be discussed during the interview process.
