Season Dates: May 12th, 2025 - August 14th, 2025

As an AmeriCorps Trail Crew Leader, you'll lead a crew of four AmeriCorps members to complete essential trail maintenance projects in the White Mountain National Forest and adjacent areas in New Hampshire and Maine. Your leadership will be key in training and guiding the crew, ensuring safety and quality work, and executing large-scale projects such as stone staircases, timber structures, and trail relocations. 

 

What You’ll Be Doing at AMC

  • Lead and supervise a crew of four AmeriCorps members in the completion of trail maintenance and construction projects. 

  • Oversee the construction of trail structures such as staircases, bridges, retaining walls, and drainage systems. 

  • Train and supervise crew in the safe and effective use of hand tools (pick mattocks, axes, saws) and power tools (drills, generators). 

  • Use rigging equipment for project execution and teach crew how to operate tools and rigging safely. 

  • Work in all weather conditions, ensuring crew safety and work quality. 

  • Foster a culture of cooperation, safety, and responsible environmental stewardship. 

  • Plan and prepare meals for the crew, including food ordering and menu planning. 

  • Manage logistics, project specifications, and communicate with AMC Trails Program staff for feedback. 

  • Maintain tools, equipment, and the program facility as needed. 

  • Serve as the primary responder and coordinator in the event of an emergency. 

Qualifications

What AMC is Looking For

  • Must be at least 18 years old by the start of the season. 

  • At least 1-2 years of trail work experience required. 

  • Strong leadership, self-motivation, and communication skills. 

  • Ability to prioritize tasks, assign roles, and manage a diverse team. 

  • Physical ability to carry heavy loads (50+ lbs.) for long distances over rugged terrain. 

  • Familiarity with hand tools and power tools; training is preferred. 

  • Ability to work under varying weather conditions, including rain, heat, and humidity. 

  • Commitment to Leave No Trace principles and backcountry stewardship. 

  • Strong judgment, problem-solving skills, and a safe driving record (subject to verification). 

  • Experience working with people of diverse backgrounds. 

 

What AMC Can Offer You

Salary: $20 hourly, depending on experience 40-45 hours per week.

The initial salary represents our starting point, and our compensation philosophy is designed to reward and recognize the contributions of our employees as they grow within the organization. External candidates typically begin their journey with us at the starting point of the salary range. The final compensation offer will be based on factors such as experience, education, skills and geographic differential relevant to the position, and will be discussed during the interview process.
