The Hegeler Carus Foundation is charged with the operations and preservation of the Hegeler Carus Mansion, an 1876 Second Empire National Historic Landmark by architect W. W. Boyington and interior designer, August Fiedler. The Mansion showcases intricate parquet floors and hand-painted ceilings. The mansion played a pivotal role in industry, philosophy, publishing, and religion. The Mansion hosts tours Thursday-Saturday at 10am, 12pm, and 2pm along with various special events.

Mission: To preserve and use the mansion and its many stories to inspire excitement and appreciation locally and globally (our audience) for its heritage, architecture, and design.

The Hegeler Carus Foundation, a multi-faceted museum campus in La Salle, IL, is looking for a Construction Projects Volunteer to join our team. The Construction Projects Volunteer will work closely with staff on the various construction projects (within their capacity) at the Hegeler Carus Museum Campus.

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Working closely with the Site Manager to best apply your construction skills here at the Hegeler Carus Museum Campus
  • Projects could include the following depending on the Volunteer’s skill set:
    • Rewiring of lighting
    • Rewiring of electrical outlets
    • General repairs to roofs
    • General repairs to mechanical items
    • Laying or re-laying of pavers
    • Deconstruction of structures in bad repair
    • Tuck Pointing
    • Cleaning of woodwork
    • General plumbing
    • Other general construction items as needed

Qualifications

  • A special interest in historic structures
  • An interest in all aspects of historic structures and their upkeep
