New Roads School is seeking a part-time Theater Technician for our Moss Theater. The hours for this position is on an as needed basis when the Theater is in use for day time or evening events that take place on weekdays as well as weekends. 

The theater technician is responsible for the smooth operation and implementation of technical elements for events in the Moss Theater, including but not limited to lighting, sound, and projections. The theater technician should be well versed in multiple technical disciplines as specific needs will vary based on the needs of a given event.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

  • Assists with the setup of the theater and load-in of clients’ equipment, ensures all need theater and dressing room areas are unlocked.
  • Is familiar with the run of show and all technical needs for a given event.
  • Walks any client provided technicians through the operation of Moss equipment.
  • Maintains regular communication with all event staff, including the Technical Director, house and backstage management.
  • Operates the ION lighting console or SQ-7 (in the absence of an audio engineer) during the performance.
  • If the primary event lead, manages technical and backstage staff as well as talent in the event of an emergency.
  • Resolves any technical issues during the performance with the relevant staff.
  • Assists with strike. Makes sure all Moss equipment is properly stored away and facilitates the return of any client provided equipment.
  • Follows all provided shutdown and lockup procedures.
  • Along with the Technical Director, coordinates performance timelines with stage management, including pre show, curtain speeches, and intermission.
  • Completes and distributes reports for each performance, if required.

Qualifications

REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor’s Degree Preferred
  • 2-3 years experience working in a theater
  • Must be available to work a flexible schedule including evening and weekends
  • Previous experience working in theaters
  • Previous experience in a relevant technical discipline including lighting, sound, scenic, rigging, or other related fields
  • Experience with ETC Eos lighting consoles and/or Allen & Heath sound systems
  • Previous experience working in educational settings and/or with students is preferred, but not required
  • Demonstrated attention to detail and time management skills
  • Excellent organizational and problem solving skills
  • Demonstrate character and professionalism with excellent ethics 
  • Demonstrated excellent attendance and punctuality
  • Ability to multitask in a high pace environment

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Position requires sitting, standing, walking on level and slippery surfaces, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, squatting, stooping, grasping, and making repetitive hand movements in the performance of daily work activities. The position requires grasping, repetitive hand movements, and fine coordination in preparing event materials using a computer keyboard. The ability to lift, push, and drag equipment and supplies weighing up to 50 pounds is required. The noise level in the work environment may be moderate to loud depending on working conditions.Reasonable accommodation will be considered to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of this job.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS

  • A valid California Driver License is required. Applicants must pass a criminal history background check, and TB test.
