Description

The Physical Education Teacher is a Gymnasium Teacher working in a small setting Transitional Classroom attending to Students with mental and Intellectual Disabilities while providing physical Education Instructions.

Having a Life Guard Certification is preferred.

 

SPECIAL EDUCATION TEACHER RATES:

              BA/BS: $60,116

              MA/MS: $66,403             

SPECIAL SIGN ON BONUS - $ 3000 PAID OUT IN 2 EQUAL INSTALLMENTS IN A YEAR

PURPOSE:

This position provides physical education instruction to students with disabilities. This process includes assessment/evaluation, daily instruction, collaboration with classroom teachers and related service providers.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Teach physical education concepts and curriculum to special education students K-12 according to Illinois State Board of Education        Requirements.
2. Develop, create, and identify the Physical Education Curriculum for the Little City Center for Education.
3. Adapt curriculum to individual student need as needed.
4. Assess current motor skills and fitness levels at identified benchmarking periods as appropriate.
5. Carry out educational requirements, adaptations, and modifications as specified in IEP.
6. Consult and work cooperatively with teachers and related service/therapy staff to meet student needs.
7. Consult and work collaboratively with the Little City Recreation Department and team to ensure program objectives are met.
8. Plan and implement lessons appropriate for students’ abilities and functioning levels.
9. Participate and contribute physical education accommodations for students annual Individualized Education Plans.
10. Prepare and facilitate engaging whole group classroom lessons while modifying and differentiating the work to meet each individual          student’s needs.
11. Identify, and obtain materials to teach effectively individuals with disabilities.
12. Maintain control and storage of Little City Center for Education Equipment used for Physical Education and/or Recreational Therapy        purposes.
13. Provide updates to teachers, parents/guardians, case managers, and other team members as appropriate and in parent/teacher              conferences.
14. Supervise paraprofessionals or teachers acting as paraprofessionals in the physical education/recreational therapy class.
15. Participate in ongoing professional development to ensure certification/licensure remains current.
16. Monitor and facilitate students’ behavior management plans.
17. Administration of formal, informal, benchmarking, classroom, and state assessments when appropriate.
18. Provide needed accommodations for student learning and testing when required.
19. Build and maintain safe, fair, and respectful learning environments that celebrate the diversity of the student population.
20. Work collaboratively within a team environment.
21. Collaboration with the Little City Recreation Department to ensure community-based students have can access Special Olympic               Events should they be eligible to participate.
22. Identify and lead Special Olympic planning and events for school students in collaboration with the Little City Recreation Department        as needed.
23. Act as liaison between Little City Recreation Department and Little City Center for Education in completing paperwork related to                Special Olympics registration and requirements for event participation for community-based students.
24. Other Duties as assigned by the Little City Center for Education Administrator that would be expected or anticipated of an educator          within the school.
25. Maintains American Heart Association certification in First Aid and CPR.
26. Successfully completes Little City required training, re-training, and any additional training as required by Little City policies and                practices, or as assigned by his or her immediate supervisor.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Current Illinois Teaching Certificate/License. Bachelor’s Degree in Physical Education, or Adaptive Physical Education, or Special Education (LBS1), or related kinesiology field. Must also have a current Lifeguard Training and Certificate.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS & WORK ENVIRONMENT:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is subject to sitting, walking, and standing for prolonged periods; frequently grasps, lifts, holds, or feels objects; occasionally stoops, kneels, crouches, or crawls. The employee frequently is required to use manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination when working with persons served and handling office, medical, or household equipment. The employee is subject to assist and lift up to 50 pounds with varying amounts of assistance on a reoccurring basis. The employee is required to have corrected vision and hearing within normal range and the ability to operate a motor vehicle. Must have the ability to perform CPR and CPI. Occupational exposure to blood, body fluids, infectious substances, including communicable diseases when performing personal care (Category III). Occasional exposure to cleaning agents and disinfectants. Residential work environment with a noise level of normal to loud.
