JOB SUMMARY:

The Head Softball Coach/Athletic Administrator is responsible for administering, promoting, coordinating, and continually improving the softball program. The Head Coach/Athletic Administrator will also be responsible for additional administrative duties within the Athletic Department, including home event management during the off season.  This position reports directly to the Assistant Vice President for Athletics.

 

Lasell University invites applications for the 12-month, full-time position of Head Softball Coach/Athletic Administrator.  Lasell University is a member of the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) and the NCAA Division III and offers 17 varsity sports (8 for men and 9 for women). Lasell’s 50-acre campus is located in Newton, MA, a community located ten miles west of Boston. The co-educational institution, offering professionally oriented baccalaureate and master’s degree programs, has an enrollment of 1200 full-time undergraduate students. 

The Athletic Department is housed in the Division of Student Affairs

Responsibilities:

The Head Coach/Athletic Administrator will direct all facets of a competitive NCAA Division III softball program with a special emphasis on recruitment/retention of appropriate student-athletes; specific tasks include but are not limited to: practice and game preparation; budgeting; academic support; scheduling of practices and games; fundraising; supervision of assistant coach(es); alumni engagement and insuring the general welfare of the student-athlete. It is required that the candidate have a thorough and complete understanding of all NCAA Division III philosophies and regulations and will adhere to these at all times.  Regular day, evening and weekend hours are required.

Additional administrative duties will be assigned by the Assistant Vice President for Athletics.  Administrative duties may include one or more of the following: student-athlete programming; compliance, club sports and intramurals, liaison for officials’ payments, department budgeting, travel coordinator, or other day to day administrative duties.  Administrative duties will also include off-season home event management and support for all department-wide events. 

 

 

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Fulfill all tasks attendant to the overall management of the softball team and do so in a manner that is consistent with the educational mission of Lasell University, and embodies the educational philosophies of the Department of Athletics and the National College Athletic Association (NCAA).
  • Promote the positive development and growth of student-athletes:  academically, athletically and personally; and monitor academic progress of student-athletes to insure eligibility and progress towards a degree. 
  • Recruit and retain student-athletes for the softball team in accordance with Lasell University and National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Guidelines.
  • Understand and adhere to all Lasell University, NCAA and Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) bylaws, rules, policies and protocols.
  • Coordinate all practice and training sessions for the softball team and prepare the team for competition.
  • Provide input to the Assistant Vice President for Athletics regarding team budget and manage budget effectively.
  • Assume other administrative duties as assigned.  Administrative duties will include off-season game management and may include travel coordination and/or student-success programming.
  • Work collaboratively with all professional members of the Lasell Community; and all members of the Athletic Department, including:  athletic trainers, Director of Athletic Communications and event management staff.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree required; master’s preferred. Previous coaching experience and administrative experience at the collegiate level is strongly preferred.  Proficient knowledge of NCAA Division III rules is required.  The successful candidate must demonstrate a commitment to the overall education of student-athletes; a solid work ethic; the ability to work independently; strong organizational skills and the ability to interact positively and professionally within the department, the campus, and the community.
