This position is only open to current Pacific University Students who are eligible for Federal Work Study.

Job Title: FWS Makerspace Student Technician
Department Name & Location: The Berglund Center’s Boxer Makerspace, Tran Library 208
Length of employment: 2024-2025 Academic year
Wage rate: $15.95/hour

The Berglund Center's Boxer Makerspace is a collaborative space where students, faculty and staff can design and build prototypes using tools such as 3D printers, 3D scanners, a vacuum former, an electronics workstation, laser engravers/cutters and other specialized equipment.

We are looking for a person who has creative inclinations, who is interested in developing new skills, and who is excited about working with a diverse group of students, faculty, and staff.

Primary Responsibilities Include:
  • Welcoming new and returning users to the Makerspace
  • Assisting patrons with understanding the tools and materials available
  • Overseeing makerspace equipment and space usage
  • Managing inventory of consumables (3D printer resins, materials, etc.)
  • Keeping track of equipment/product use for scheduling purposes
  • Producing artifacts/prototypes using Makerspace equipment
  • Assisting with running group events held at the Makerspace
  • Communicating the current status of the Makerspace (projects in process, etc. to other employees)

  • Digital Literacy
    • Digital file creation and management for coordination of team activities
    • Create digital content (2D and 3D) for Makerspace promotion and physical infrastructure improvement
    • Inventory management
    • Training peers on the use of digital prototyping tools and software
  • Applied Problem Solving
    • Working as a peer advisor to help students navigate challenges with their projects
  • Innovation & Creativity
    • Creating and marketing events for groups using the Makerspace
    • Designing and modifying digital and physical artifacts
  • Oral & Written Communication
    • Serving as a spokesperson for the Makerspace when new community members drop by to learn more about the space
    • Creating training material (video and written) for use by other employees and community members
  • Teamwork & Leadership
    • Organizing and coordinating teammates to ensure timely delivery of projects

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:
  • Must be eligible for Federal Work Study
  • Must have some available work hours between noon at 7pm Mon-Sat
  • Ability to learn and work independently
  • Inclination to take initiative and follow through on projects
  • Good oral and written communication skills, with the ability to listen well
Desired Qualifications:
  • Previous experience with makerspace activities or equipment
  • Digital Literacy 
  • Experience with 2D or 3D design software (Adobe products, Inkscape, Canva, various CAD, etc.)
