Polytechnic School is seeking an enthusiastic, flexible, and student-centered, educator to serve as the Middle School Dean of Academics and Student Life. In partnership with the Middle School Director, the Dean of Academics and Student Life will collaborate with the Grade Level Deans and the rest of the Middle School teachers to support the academic life and social/emotional experience of the Middle School students. The Dean will report to the Middle School Director and will serve on the Middle School’s leadership team.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Development and oversight of the Middle School curriculum with a vision towards exceptional teaching and learning
  • Collaboration with faculty to create and implement pedagogical goals
  • Development and refinement of the advisory program in partnership with the Middle School Director and Grade Level Deans
  • Engage robustly in fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion to promote a healthy learning environment
  • Management of the discipline process in partnership with deans, advisors, and the Middle School Director, including follow-up communication with parents and record-keeping
  • Participation in all Middle School grade-level and divisional faculty meetings to ensure consistency and coordination of activities
  • Lead MS Department Chair Meetings
  • Oversee Student Council
  • Attendance on MS Outdoor Ed. Trips
  • Student Activities
  • Oversees Middle School Scope & Sequence
  • Oversee Magic Mountain trip
  • Potentially teach a class in area of expertise
  • Regular meetings with counterparts at Lower and Upper Schools
  • Member of the Middle School Student Support Team
  • Additional committee work as needed (Admissions, Schedule, Hiring, Advisory, DEI)
  • Middle School Advisor
  • Other duties as assigned

​​​Physical Requirements and Work Environment

  • Work in an environment dealing with a wide variety of challenges and deadlines, as well as a diverse array of contacts.
  • Work at a desk and computer for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to lift up to 30 lbs.
  • Work primarily in a traditional climate-controlled classroom environment.
  • Work intermittently in outside weather conditions, including extreme heat and cold.

Qualifications

  • BA/BS degree, advanced degree(s) preferred
  • Demonstrated experience creating inclusive learning environments and opportunities
  • Middle school teaching experience
  • Willingness to take initiative and ask questions
  • A passion for middle school life
  • Curriculum-design experience
  • Understanding of the developmental needs of adolescents
