Overview: Surf Internet is seeking a skilled and dedicated Fiber Drop Installation Technician to join our team. As a Fiber Drop Installation Technician, you will be responsible for the installation, maintenance, and repair of fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) connections in residential & small business properties. Your expertise will contribute to the expansion and improvement of high-speed internet services for our customers. The ideal candidate will possess strong technical skills, excellent problem-solving abilities, and a customer-oriented approach. 

Reports to: Fiber Installation Manager

Job Status: Non-Exempt

Responsibilities:

  • Perform FTTH installations in residential properties, including running fiber optic cables, installing equipment, and ensuring proper connectivity.

  • Become certified and operate a bucket truck which will be used as a daily driver.

  • Respond to same day bucket assists within the aerial plant to support installation and service repair.

  • Gaffing utility poles as needed

  • Conduct site surveys to assess installation requirements and plan the most efficient and effective installation process.

  • Terminate, splice, and test fiber optic cables to ensure optimal performance and adherence to industry standards.

  • Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues related to FTTH connections, including signal loss, connectivity problems, and equipment malfunctions.

  • Collaborate with other team members and departments to ensure smooth coordination of installation and repair activities.

  • Educate customers on the proper use and maintenance of FTTH equipment, addressing any questions or concerns they may have.

  • Adhere to safety protocols and industry best practices during installations and repairs to minimize risks and ensure a safe work environment.

  • Maintain accurate records of installations, repairs, and equipment inventory, ensuring timely and thorough documentation.

  • Stay updated on industry trends and advancements in FTTH technology, acquiring new skills and knowledge as necessary.

  • Provide exceptional customer service, responding to customer inquiries and concerns promptly and professionally.

  • Maintain the company vehicle and other equipment per service requirements and safety guidelines.

  • Operate company vehicles in a safe and courteous manner, and in accordance with all laws and company policies.

  • Participates in team meetings as scheduled.

  • Participates in on-call rotation once assigned

  • Regular, consistent and punctual attendance required. Works on regularly scheduled days as well as unscheduled days and beyond regular work hours due to customer or operational demands, as needed.

  • Follows all company standard procedures, policies and safety practices in the course of performing work activities.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent required; additional technical certifications or vocational training in telecommunications or a related field is a plus.

  • Minimum 18 years of age

  • Flexible schedule throughout the week, able to work weekends as part of a regular working shift

  • Ability to travel throughout Michigan, Indiana and Illinois regions as needed.

  • Familiarity with telecommunications infrastructure, including routers, modems, and networking protocols is a plus.

  • Must be able to get a medical card within the state of Michigan within 60 days

  • Must be able to obtain a chauffeur license within the state of Michigan within 60 days

  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to diagnose and resolve technical issues effectively.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact with customers in a professional and courteous manner.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, managing multiple tasks and priorities efficiently.

  • Proficient computer skills and the ability to use various software applications for documentation and record-keeping.

  • Physical stamina and dexterity to perform installations in various residential environments, including climbing ladders, climbing utility poles, and operating a bucket truck.

  • Must be comfortable working at heights of up to 75 ft

  • Must possess a valid driver's license and clean driving record.

Working Conditions

Employees are constantly required to stand, walk, use their hands to handle objects, tools or controls and reach with their hands and arms. Must possess physical conditioning and stamina to climb heights up to 100 feet and perform physically demanding tasks at such heights. Must be able to frequently climb a ladder and work in an elevated position. On a constant basis, must safely lift, carry and maneuver heavy or awkward objects 75 pounds or more, with or without assistance. Must be able to work safely in a field or office environment. Must be adept at working in adverse weather conditions including but not limited to: rain, snow, heat, cold, and ice.
