Description

Summary: Advise and assist claim personnel to ensure the proper handling of claims according to established procedures. Assist claim management, claimants, insureds and agents in providing the best possible claim service.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Advise and assist the claim file handling of claim representatives to ensure adherence to claim procedures. Provide guidance on coverage, legal questions, and proper reserving, and monitor files in litigation.
  • Conduct liability file reviews to ensure proper claims procedures are being adhered to. This includes providing feedback, and any necessary training for claims representatives based on identified needs.
  • Identify, evaluate, and recommend new processes and/or tools to improve the quality and effectiveness of claims service.
  • Monitor statistical reports and communicate to and advise claims representatives to ensure corporate goals for claims handling are being met.
  • Review, negotiate, direct investigation and settle assigned claim files.
  • Manage claim files in litigation. Managing partner defense counsel involvement, including preparing, evaluating, settling, or determining trial strategy.
  • Provide authorization for settlement of claims that exceed the claim representative's authority. Make a recommendation to the claim directors on open files which exceed personal authorization.
  • Respond to telephone calls from claimants, insureds and agents concerning the handling of a claim, coverage questions, etc.
  • Review and evaluate subrogation procedures and activity to ensure appropriate recovery.
  • May monitor arbitration filings and attend arbitration hearings.
  • May attend, represent and settle mediation cases on behalf of Company.
  • May prepare reports for management as requested.
  • May oversee the claim office operation in the director’s absence.

Authority: Perform duties within limit of established claim policies and procedures with latitude for independent judgment.

Qualifications

Education and/or Experience: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent. Minimum of seven years of claim adjusting experience with preference given to applicants with at least two years of supervisory/management experience.

Promotional potential and organizational progressions: Director of Casualty Claims or Director of Property Claims.

Required Knowledge and Skills:

  • Communication Skills: Strong verbal and written communication; conveys complex information clearly to insureds, agents, and attorneys, etc, handles emotions in conversations.
  • Mathematical & Analytical Skills: Understands company claims policies and effectively communicates them to staff; evaluates information from multiple sources.
  • Decision-making & Problem Solving: Interprets and applies legal concepts, caseloads, contracts, and policies; communicates decisions to staff.
  • Relationship Management: directly interacts with insureds, claimants, agents, attorneys, doctors, vendors, and internal staff; handles sensitive situations with diplomacy.
  • Industry Knowledge & Technical Skills: knowledgeable in insurance coverages, tort law, claim values, and claims management techniques; proficient with computer systems and data entry; strong time management and attendance.

Certifications: AIC, Involved in CPCU classes, and ongoing education as required.

Physical Requirements: The work environment is typical of an office setting, where the employee may occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
