POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the direction of the Site Medical Director, the nurse practitioner will provide primary medical care services, focusing on sexual health services.       

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  • Provide evaluation, treatment and prevention services for sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in accordance with APLA Health protocols.
  • Provide HIV preventative care, Pre-exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) and Post-exposure Prophylaxis (PEP), according to APLA Health protocols.
  • Provide general primary medical care for adult patients at APLA Health, as time permits, at its medical clinic in Long Beach and other clinical sites as needed. 
  • Conduct histories and physical exams on patients
  • Order, interpret and evaluate diagnostic tests to identify and assess patients’ clinical problems and health care needs
  • Establish treatment plans; and administers, furnishes or recommends medications
  • Document gathered information in medical record, as required by policies, and complete charting within the timeframe set by clinic policy. 
  • Provide health maintenance and preventative care according to quality evidence-based standards and protocols related to contractual obligations
  • Participate in peer chart review and quality assurance activities as part of the APLA Health Quality Management Program
  • Review lab results for all patients tested for STIs under the STI testing program within 24 business hours of result availability
  • The NP will be expected to see at least 14 patients per full clinic day.  The NP will have administrative time amounting to 10% of the work week. 
  • Other clinic duties will include telephone and in person triage, and seeing same-day or walk in patients.  Patients presenting in need of STI treatment or HIV post-exposure prophylaxis will be seen the same day.
  • Work with a passion for managing STIs and providing HIV prevention services for a federally-qualified health center population                                      

OTHER DUTIES MAY BE ASSIGNED TO MEET BUSINESS NEEDS.

Qualifications

REQUIREMENTS:

Training and Experience:

Possession of a valid California Nurse Practitioner license with no pending or previous disciplinary action from any state licensing entity. Minimum of 1-year experience managing primary care patients preferred.  Must possess a current DEA license and BLS/CPR certificate. Must be eligible to participate in Medicare, Medi-Cal, F-PACT and other federal health programs.  Experience working with electronic health records required, eClinicalWorks preferred. Bilingual English-Spanish is a plus.

 

Knowledge of:

Management of LGBTQIA+ persons preferred.

STI and HIV prevention expert guidelines from sources such as the CDC

 

Ability to:

On-call duties by phone only are required.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

This is primarily an office position that requires only occasional bending, reaching, stooping, lifting and moving of office materials weighing 25 pounds or less. The position requires daily use of a personal computer and requires entering, viewing, and revising text and graphics on the computer terminal and on paper.

 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Must possess a valid California driver’s license; proof of auto liability insurance; and have the use of a personal vehicle for work related purposes.
