Are you ready to take your career to the next level while addressing environmental issues in your community? Join the San Jose Conservation Corps as a Youth Corpsmember Intern! Our 4-week paid summer internship program offers high school students aged 16-17 hands-on work experience, professional skill development, and insight into climate challenges. Interns will connect with and learn from local organizations who are actively working to make a difference in our community. One of the four weeks will be used to take part in the California Naturalist Course to learn about California’s unique ecology and natural communities. No prior work experience is necessary to participate in this internship.

 

Work Schedule and Sessions

Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 1:30 p.m.

Cohort 1: June 16th - July 11th

Cohort 2: July 14th - August 8th

Work Experience

🌳Natural Resource Management:

  • Gain natural resource skills by working with land management agencies.
  • Engage in outdoor work such as land restoration and invasive species removal projects.

 

♻️ Zero Waste:

  • Gain exposure to zero waste jobs by learning how our recycling team collects and sorts items like tires, mattresses, beverage containers, and electronic waste.

 

🌽 Community Sustainability Projects:

  • Collaborate with partners to conduct urban farming, compost food waste, and perform local outreach.

 

Professional Development:

Interns will also gain essential career-building skills and certifications, including:

  • Crafting a professional resume to showcase your skills and experiences.
  • Practicing interviewing techniques to confidently present yourself to potential employers.
  • Learning effective job networking strategies to expand your career opportunities.
  • PAID certifications such as American Red Cross Adult and Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED and American Red Cross Bloodborne Pathogens

 

**SJCC+CS IS A MANDATORY COVID-19 VACCINATION EMPLOYER**

All interns will be required to provide proof of vaccination absent an approved medical or religious exemption prior to their start date. If an intern is in the process of being vaccinated, their start date may be adjusted to an available future date after they have been vaccinated.  Fully vaccinated means at it has been at least two weeks since the person has completed the entire recommended initial series of a COVID-19 vaccine.

 

Physical Requirements and Work Environment

Interns works outdoors in all weather conditions, including wet, hot, and cold. As such, interns may be exposed to smoke, dust and air contaminants, sun / UV radiation exposure, and insects.

Essential physical functions and requirements include:

  • Continuous Stand and walk variable distances on uneven surfaces including concrete, asphalt, dirt or mud trails, and terrain with potential tripping or slipping hazards such as potholes, tree roots, puddles of water, leaves, branches, or similar.
  • Continuous - Possess dexterity of hands and fingers to grasp and manipulate tools and other equipment necessary to perform job functions.
  • Continuous - Vision to see near, distant, color, depth, peripherally and adjust focus with or without correction to operate equipment, read and understand written materials, and detect written information being displayed.
  • Continuous - Observe, see, hear, locate source of sounds, and respond to others
  • Continuous - Travel to job site and SJCC+CS locations for timely attendance to meetings, training, educational sessions, or other assigned events.
  • Continuous - Comply with written and verbal instruction; follow established organizational and safety protocol.
  • Continuous - Arrive to work and all scheduled or assigned commitments (meetings, trainings, etc) consistently and on time
  • Frequent - Neck rotation and flexibility
  • Frequent - Kneel, bend at the waist, stoop, squat, crouch
  • Frequent - Reaching outwards and overhead
  • Occasional - Sitting 
  • Occasional - Lift, carry, push, or pull objects up to 20 lbs.

*Frequency definitions based on an average 5 hour workday. Frequency may vary day-to-day.

Seldom: 1% – 10% (less than 45 minutes)

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements

  • Must be between the ages of 16-17 years old.
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States, and able to provide documentation.
  • Must be a current high school student attending school in Santa Clara County
  • Enjoy spending time outdoors, including in hot and exposed conditions, with energy to engage in manual labor tasks for 1-2 hours at a time. 
  • Minimum 2.0 GPA.
  • Driver's license not required, but reliable transportation to and from our worksite is necessary.
  • A valid Permit to Work is required for high school students under the age of 18. Failure to provide this document may result in disqualification from the program.
  • Must be COVID-19 vaccinated and able to provide documentation.
