Summary
The Brooklyn Navy Yard Development Corporation (BNYDC) is the not-for-profit corporation that serves as the real estate developer and property manager of the Yard on behalf of its owner, The City of New York (the City). BNYDC constantly strives to provide an environment in which businesses and careers can take root and grow.
The Safety Director will be responsible for promoting and maintaining a safe working environment for all BNY employees, tenants, and visitors by ensuring compliance with safety regulations and guidelines. The primary focus of this role will be to identify potential hazards, implement preventative measures, conduct safety investigations, and provide training to enhance the overall safety culture within the Yard.
Areas of Responsibility
- Conduct regular safety inspections and audits of facilities, equipment, and processes to identify potential hazards and ensure adherence to safety standards
- Investigate incidents and near-misses to determine root cause and recommend corrective action
- Develop policies and programs to ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations
- Collaborate with staff and tenants to mitigate safety risks associated with their work areas
- Provide staff safety education, including ongoing trainings and refresher courses
- Maintain documentation, including incident reports, safety records, and training records
- Stay up to date with new industry regulations and trends, implementing best practices for continuous improvement
- Conduct emergency response drills and ensure emergency preparedness plans are in place
- Conduct Safety Committee meetings with staff and managers
- Perform other job-related duties and projects as assigned
Required Skills and Abilities
- Demonstrated experience conducting safety inspections and audits
- Strong understanding of hazard identification, risk assessment, and control measures
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to train personnel
- Proficiency in safety management software and applications
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office
- Ability to work in various environments, including construction sites and manufacturing facilities
- Ability to make sound judgments in emergency situations
- Knowledge of local, state, and federal safety regulations, guidelines, and NYC building codes
- Working knowledge of construction techniques and methods
