Summary

The Summer Camp Assistant Director assists the Summer Camp Director in the daily operations at the assigned summer youth program site.  


Qualifications 

  • Must be at least 18 years of age 
  • Ability to plan and lead recreational activities for children aged 6 - 12 years 
  • Previous youth program leadership experience preferred. 
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with Park District staff and the general public. 
  • Enthusiasm for working with children and a passion for creating joyful experiences. 
  • Strong leadership and communication skills, with the ability to engage and motivate diverse groups. 
  • Excellent organizational and planning skills to manage schedules and activities effectively. 
  • Resourcefulness and adaptability to handle unexpected situations and changing needs. 
  • Commitment to participant safety and well-being, with a strong understanding of child development and best practices. 

Supervision 

The Summer Camp Assistant Director reports to the Summer Camp Director. The Summer Camp Assistant Director assists in supervising summer camp leaders and volunteers. 


Classifications 

  • Non-exempt, hourly 
  • Seasonal (not to exceed six (6) months) 
    • Season is May to September 

Training – Can be obtained through the Champaign Park District 

  • First Aid, AED, and CPR Certification 
  • Heads Up Concussion training 
  • Mandated reporter training 
  • Harassment prevention training 
  • Bloodborne pathogen training 
  • Recreation software system training 
  • Drivers training and test for anyone 21-year-old and older who will be driving  
  • Facility training 

Essential Functions 

  • Follow all Champaign Park District safety policies and perform all work in a manner that ensures the safety of oneself, the public, fellow employees.  
  • Demonstrate a high level of professionalism and discretion in all interactions, including maintaining strict confidentiality regarding staff information, communications from supervisors, and conversations with parents or patrons. Uphold the Park District’s policies and standards for data privacy and confidentiality at all times. 
  • Assist in creating engaging camp activities, ensuring smooth execution, and consistently seeking innovative ways to enhance the camp experience. 
  • Work collaboratively with the Summer Camp Director to uphold program safety protocols, manage risks, and respond effectively to any incidents. 
  • Assist in training, supervising, and evaluating summer camp leaders and volunteers to ensure a high standard of program delivery. 
  • Maintain positive public relations with participants, parents, other staff members, and the general public, fostering a welcoming and inclusive environment. 
  • Maintain an accurate budget of all program expenses, demonstrating financial responsibility and adherence to budgetary constraints. 
  • Responsible for the purchase, maintenance, and safe proper use of program supplies, ensuring availability and functionality. 
  • Maintain the program environment in a clean and orderly fashion, contributing to a safe and enjoyable atmosphere for participants. 
  • Ensure a safe and secure environment for participants, actively managing potential risks and maintaining a focus on the well-being of all involved. 
  • Responsible for maintaining an open line of communication with the Supervisor regarding all situations concerning the program, participants, and staff. 
  • Communicate effectively with staff, participants, and parents, providing clear and timely information about program activities and updates. 
  • Maintain records of program operations, including participant files, incident/accident reports, attendance, and sign-out sheets, ensuring accurate documentation. 
  • Responsible for parent newsletters, weekly schedules, payroll, required reports, and addressing requests promptly and efficiently. 
  • Comply with equal opportunity and harassment laws, policies and procedures. 
  • Other duties as assigned. 

Physical Considerations 

  • Engage in the physical execution of program activities, requiring mobility and hands-on involvement in coordinating and overseeing events. 
  • Physically assist in training, supervising, and evaluating summer camp program leaders and volunteers, participating actively in program oversight. 
  • Participate in maintaining the program environment in a clean and orderly fashion, contributing physically to the overall cleanliness and organization of program space.
  • Actively engage in maintaining a safe and secure environment for participants, requiring physical presence and monitoring to ensure the well-being of everyone involved. 
  • Must be able to be physically active to lead activities and fieldtrips.

Environmental Considerations 

  • May be exposed to all weather conditions.
