Description

The Great Basin Institute, in cooperation with the National Park Service (NPS), is recruiting two for (2) AmeriCorps Post Fire Botany Technicians to work in Parashant National Monument. This project will ground-truth fire perimeters in the Mojave Desert. A 2-person crew will conduct surveys of native and non-native plants to determine the extent of areas of intact, functional and non-functional Mojave Desert ecosystem vegetation. Surveys will be used to create more detailed maps of the Mojave Desert and Mojave Desert/Colorado Plateau transition sections of Parashant National Monument and provide management information related to wildfire response.

 

Duties will include, but are not limited to:

  • Conducting field botanical surveys of native shrubs, forbs and cacti, and non- native plants
  • Entering data into databases and GIS platforms (ArcGIS Pro, Survey 123)
  • Assisting with survey prioritization and data analysis
  • Working cooperatively with federal partners

Timeline:

  • 450 Hour Term
  • Full time (40 hours/week) 
  • Start Date: Tentative January- February
  • Will typically work 4-10’s

Compensation and Benefits:  

  • $680 wkly compensation rate before taxes
  • Segal AmeriCorps Education Award (450 hrs): $ 1,956.35(Upon successful completion, the award may be used for past, present or future educational expenses, including payment of qualifying federal student loans and Title IV accredited college tuition)

Qualifications

  • Meet AmeriCorps eligibility requirements: (1) U.S. citizenship or legal resident alien status, (2) eligible to receive an AmeriCorps Education Award (limit of four in a lifetime or the equivalent of two full-time education awards), (3) pass National Sex Offender Public Website (NSOPW) and federal criminal background checks, (4) adhere to the rules, regulations and code of conduct as specified in the Member Service Agreement; and (5) not engage in any prohibited activities as listed in the Member Service Agreement.
  • Ability differentiate Mojave Desert and Mojave Desert/Colorado Plateau/Great  Basin transition native look-alike shrubs, cacti and forbs from invasive plants
  • Experience camping for extended periods of time in high and low temperatures
  • Ability to work with another person for extended periods of relative isolation
  • Experience in collecting data accurately and completely and entering data correctly into a computer system;
  • Ability to use GPS unit or mobile device to record and locate points and to record field data; and
  • Possess a valid, state-issued driver’s license and clean driving record;
  • Ability to safely drive a 4WD vehicle on unimproved roads;
  • Ability to self-direct and self-motivate
  • Ability to work productively, consistently and cooperatively as part of a team to accomplish mutual goals;
  • Possess strong organizational skills;
  • Ability to communicate clearly and efficiently with the public, coworkers, and NPS staff both orally and in writing, and respond in a professional manner to inquiries from the public regarding work activities;
  • Ability to safely conduct strenuous fieldwork requiring regular physical exertion including hiking on uneven terrain;
  • Ability to lift and carry heavy items, such as equipment packs weighing up to 50 pounds, on a regular basis;
  • Familiarity with backcountry, low-impact principles preferred
