Position Overview:

Assists the Head Football Coach in formulating, teaching, and coaching technical aspects of game preparation and game strategy for an NCAA Division I, intercollegiate athletic program competing in the Big South Conference.  Assists in directing competitions, practice, administrative activities, alumni relations activities, and the recruitment process for student-athletes.


Key Responsibilities:

Responsibilities vary by role and may include, but are not limited to:

1.    Participates in the planning, organizing, and execution of preseason and season practices and contests.
2. Evaluate the athletes’ performance and progress to ensure peak performance during practices and contests. 
3.    Oversees the mental and physical preparation of athletes for contests; assists in the development of conditioning programs. 
4.    Scout sand evaluates opponents’ performance and recommends game strategy based on that evaluation 
5.    Oversees the recruitment of prospective student-athletes; evaluates prospective students' athletic and academic abilities and presents Head Coach with recruits for final selection. 
6.    Monitors the academic progress of those players assigned to the assistant coach’s position group. Assists in implementation and oversight of academic plans for at-risk student-athletes as needed. 
7.    May perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications: 

Education: 

Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution. Master’s Degree preferred.

Experience: 

Minimum of two (2) years related experience is required. Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirements.  A resume and cover letter are required.


Essential Job Functions: 

  1. Coaching - At the direction of the head coach, provide instruction, demonstration and teaching the sports dynamics to student-athletes to ensure the maximum potential of individuals and the team as a whole. Assists in coaching team during scheduled events. Assists with the development and implementation of strategy to obtain maximum level of team and individual performance.
  2. Administration: Performs administrative duties as assigned by Head Coach. These duties may include, but are not limited to: organizing and scheduling practice sessions, updating and maintaining student-athlete recruiting databases, updating and maintaining files of opponents, developing and distributing scouting reports on opponents, analyzing opponents film and scouting reports, organizing on-campus visits by prospective student-athletes (both official and unofficial).
  3. Recruiting: Scouts and recruits prospective student-athletes from high schools, junior and community colleges, and transfer portal. Makes recommendations to the head coach regarding potential of student-athlete. At the direction of the Head Coach, works with Academic Supervisors and Coordinator for Student-Athlete Services to determine each student s academic qualifications and suitability for admission, and assists in making applications.
  4. Academics: At the direction of the Head Coach, works closely with Academic  Supervisors to monitor the academic progress of each student-athlete. Assists in enforcement of mandatory study programs for freshman and upperclassmen having academic difficulties; enforces Athletic Department requirements for class attendance, make-up course work, etc.
  5. Compliance: Maintains continual and thorough familiarity with all applicable NCAA, Conference and University rules and regulations. Establishes and ensures communication and enforcement of rules and regulations concerning student-athlete: conduct, appearance, road games, punctuality and other areas as deemed appropriate.
  6. Counseling: Provides individual counseling to student-athletes as needed on personal problems, team performance, class schedules and the transition to college life. Counsels each student-athlete to set individual goals for improvement of performance. Other duties as assigned.
  7. Must have excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrate an ability to communicate effectively with athletes, members of the University community, the Charleston community, and all media. Furthermore, must have the ability to interact effectively with a wide variety of ethnically, racially, and culturally diverse populations and socioeconomic groups.
  8. Demonstrated management skills.
  9. Represent the University professionally and responsibly that is consistent with the stated values of the institution.
  10. Must have and maintain a valid driver’s license.
