VICE PRESIDENT OF DEVELOPMENT POSITION SUMMARY:

The YMCA of Southern Nevada is seeking a seasoned fundraiser to lead its financial development initiatives. The Y is one of the oldest and largest nonprofit organizations in Southern Nevada, serving over 60,000 individuals through hundreds of impactful programs each year. We are committed to helping people of all ages, abilities, backgrounds, and incomes – ensuring everyone has an opportunity to reach their full potential and that no one is turned away due to the inability to pay. From childcare to senior programs; sports to education; fitness centers to evidence-based health interventions; and swim lessons to feeding the hungry, the Y is truly for all in its cause of strengthening communities.

 

The Las Vegas Valley is one of the nation's fastest-growing regions, but it faces significant challenges such as limited access to quality childcare, education, recreation, and preventative healthcare. The Y is uniquely positioned to address these issues, and the head of financial development plays a crucial role in making this possible.

 

Excluding occasional capital campaigns and planned giving, the YMCA of Southern Nevada currently raises approximately $1.5 million in annual giving (largely unrestricted gifts from individuals, corporate sponsorships, and corporate and foundation grants) and $1.5 million in government grants each year.

 

As Vice President of Development, you’ll be at the helm of these transformative and diverse fundraising initiatives, driving efforts to maintain current contributed revenue levels and gradually increase annual giving to $2 million. You’ll lead two full-time staff, work hand-in-hand with the Chief Executive Officer, and collaborate with staff at all levels to expand our current philanthropic achievements and empower the Y to reach new heights.

 

The successful candidate will be an experienced, strategic, personable, and cause-driven individual with a track record of personally managing a donor portfolio raising at least $1 million annually. The candidate will be a results-oriented self-starter with the ability to tell a compelling story about the Y’s work through a variety of formats that inspire others to financially fuel the work of our nonprofit.

VICE PRESIDENT OF DEVELOPMENT ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Fundraising
    • Collaborate with staff at all levels to understand the needs of the organization and work with the CEO to develop strategic fundraising priorities and execution plans.
    • Research and analyze data on the current and emerging community problems the organization is primed to help solve (i.e., the problem aligns with the organization’s mission/vision and can be solved through financially sustainable programming that the organization can render in a high-quality manner).
    • Utilize various modes (e.g., networking, wealth screening software, Board network analysis) to identify individuals, corporations, foundations, and government grants that align with the organization’s strategic fundraising priorities and have the capacity to financially support the organization’s sustainability and expansion, providing for year-over-year fundraising growth even with natural donor attrition.
    • Utilize Bloomerang to grow and manage a database of 2,370 identified donors and donor prospects.
    • Cultivate and maintain meaningful relationships with donors and donor prospects.
    • Support the CEO with the ongoing recruitment, management, and development of the organization’s governing Board of Directors to ensure it is reflective of the community and needs of the organization.
    • Maintain and adhere to a calendar of solicitation deadlines.
    • Present the organization’s impact and needs in a manner that aligns with donor prospects and inspires their financial support of the organization (e.g., grant writing, interpersonal interactions, facility tours, presentations, budgeting, collateral development, social media campaigns, direct mail, staff and member giving initiatives, corporate sponsorship and employee engagement opportunities).
    • Position the Y as a community leader and collaborator in addressing critical social issues affecting the Las Vegas Valley.
    • Lead the planning and successful execution of a handful of small donor cultivation events, two mid-sized fundraising events, and one large fundraising event annually.
    • Oversee donor engagement efforts to include appreciation initiatives (e.g., donor calls, participant thank you letters, impact gifts, social media shout outs), coordination of participation in the organization’s work (e.g., connecting with program volunteer opportunities, Board membership), reporting on gift impact, and ongoing relationship management. 
  • Grant/Donor Management: this position will oversee a full-time coordinator with the following primary responsibilities, but will need to understand and participate in these tasks to varying degrees.
    • Collect, monitor, analyze and report grant data and donor interactions (e.g., submitted grants, contact information, demographics, interests, giving history).
    • Oversee the development and maintenance of grant implementation plans, Standard Operating Procedures, and template documents that align with donor/grantor reporting, invoicing, and program compliance requirements and deadlines.
    • Routinely collect and monitor financial and program data for donor-funded programs, promptly addressing any noncompliance through cross-departmental collaboration and the provision of any appropriate support/resources.
    • Ensure donor invoices and program reports are submitted on-time and accurately.
    • Attend donor/grantor trainings and meetings.
    • Develop or – depending on the document – collect from other staff in the organization required documents to comply with periodic donor/grant audits/monitoring and serve as a key liaison between the Y and donor/grantor on such audits/monitoring.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

VICE PRESIDENT OF DEVELOPMENT QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 5+ years of experience leading fundraising efforts in nonprofits with an annual fundraising goal of at least $1 million.
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university strongly preferred. Master’s degree in Public Administration, Business Administration, or related field is a plus.
  • Certified Fund-Raising Executive (CFRE) credential preferred.
  • Proven ability to tell a compelling story that inspires financial support.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills. Proven ability to build strong relationships and collaborate effectively with donors, Board Members, staff at all levels, government officials, and other stakeholders.
  • Strong strategic and critical thinking skills, with the ability to shape and execute effective fundraising strategies and apply a solution-oriented mindset to problems. 
  • Excellent project management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet competing deadlines.
  • Data-driven mindset with the ability to locate, analyze, and present information to diverse audiences.
  • Detail-oriented, with a proven ability to manage complex tasks with exceptional accuracy and to consistently deliver the highest standards of quality and performance.
  • Strong writing, mathematical, communication, presentation, and collaboration skills.
  • Intermediate proficiency with common computer software (e.g., Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Adobe, Outlook, internet browsers) required. Experience with grant/donor management software (e.g., Bloomerang, ZoomGrants, ePage, BoardEffect) preferred.

  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

 

VICE PRESIDENT OF DEVELOPMENT END RESULTS:

  • Accurate and timely grant submission, reporting, and invoicing.
  • Ask approval rate of at least 75% (excluding mass appeals).
  • Sustain government grant funding levels, with growth as appropriate to the organization’s administrative capacity and aligned with strategic fundraising priorities.
  • Grow annual giving by 5% of each prior year’s budget, with the ultimate goal of increasing annual giving from $1.5 million to $2 million through largely unrestricted gifts from new donors, donors not secured by the organization in the previous five years, and increased contributions from existing donors.
  • Plan and successfully execute special fundraising campaign goals (e.g., capital campaigns, strategic program growth campaigns) in collaboration with the CEO.
  • Compliant spend down and outcomes of grant/donor funds (i.e., no funding claw backs or audit/monitoring findings).
  • Donor retention rate of at least 65%.
  • Effective collaboration with the organization’s staff that leads to their support of fundraising efforts; adherence to donor regulations and Financial Development Department policies/guidance; and timely receipt of financial and program data.
