POSITION SUMMARY:

The Senior Human Resources Generalist serves as the primary HR resource for Madison Veterinary Specialists, partnering with leadership to build and maintain a positive, compliant, and high-performing workplace. This is not an entry-level position — the ideal candidate operates with a high degree of independence and autonomy while thriving in a supportive, collaborative administrative team environment.

This role blends strategic partnership with hands-on HR operations, including benefits administration, leave management, compliance oversight, payroll coordination, and employee relations. The administrative team works at a fast pace, upholding MVS’s values of respect, teamwork, and excellence in every interaction.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Strategic & Advisory

Serve as a trusted partner to hospital leadership, advising on policy interpretation, employee relations, and performance management.

Lead the development, maintenance, and improvement of job descriptions, evaluation tools, and HR processes.

Monitor and recommend updates to personnel policies to ensure compliance and alignment with organizational goals.

  • Analyze HR metrics (turnover, engagement, performance trends) and make data-driven recommendations to leadership.
  • Collaborate with managers to foster a culture of respect, teamwork, and continuous improvement.
  • Participate in leadership meetings and contribute to strategic HR planning.

Employee Experience & Culture

  • Lead onboarding and orientation programs that engage new team members and reinforce MVS values.
  • Support employee engagement initiatives, recognition programs, and staff development opportunities.
  • Provide guidance to managers on conflict resolution, coaching, and employee development.
  • Serve as a confidential resource for employees, ensuring trust and professional integrity.

Benefits & Leave Administration

  • Administer health, vision, dental, HSA/FSA, 401(k), COBRA, and ancillary benefits, including annual open enrollment and status changes.
  • Liaise with insurance carriers to resolve employee benefit concerns promptly.
  • Manage FMLA, ADA, and other leave programs, ensuring accurate tracking, documentation, and compliance.
  • Oversee benefit eligibility audits and coordinate with payroll for accurate deductions.

Compliance & HR Operations

  • Ensure compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential employee files, I-9 documentation, and HRIS records (Paycom).
  • Support payroll processing and verify accuracy of compensation changes and benefit deductions.
  • Coordinate Worker’s Compensation claims and assist in accident investigations.
  • Partner with the Hospital Administrator and corporate attorney on sensitive HR matters as needed.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or related field (preferred).
  • SHRM-CP or PHR certification strongly preferred.
  • Minimum 3–5 years of progressive HR experience, with strong background in benefits, compliance, and employee relations.
  • Proven ability to work independently, prioritize multiple demands, and meet deadlines.
  • Experience with HRIS systems, preferably Paycom.
  • Strong knowledge of FMLA, ADA, COBRA, Unemployment, and other employment laws.
  • Excellent communication, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills.

Physical & Work Environment Requirements

  • Primarily office-based with prolonged sitting, computer work, and frequent interaction with staff.
  • Ability to lift up to 10 lbs. occasionally.
  • Fast-paced environment with multiple priorities and occasional high-stress situations.
  • Must be able to commit to onsite work location
  • Must be comfortable with small animals, while restraint and handling are not a requirement – it’s what we do.
