Summary
The Water Maintenance Technician II performs semi-skilled work primarily related to the general maintenance of the Town’s municipal water system. This position is responsible for a variety of water services, including shut-offs, meter installs or replacements, pressure checks and detecting and repairing water leaks. The Water Maintenance Technician II reports directly to the Water Foreman.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
The below list is intended to illustrate the responsibilities of the position and is not all-encompassing. The Town may change these duties at any time.

  • Responsible for performing monthly water shut offs
  • Responsible for water meter installation, replacements and maintenance
  • Responsible for annual fire hydrant flushing program; performs maintenance and repairs as needed
  • Responsible for valve exercising program; performs repairs as needed
  • Responsible for pressure checks and the detection and repair of water leaks
  • Responsible for performing locates for water lines, service lines, meters and water valves as well as Town-owned fiber optics
  • Assists with the repair of line breaks as needed or directed by management
  • Assists with the collection of water samples
  • Assists with inspections for certifications of occupancy
  • Assists the Streets department with snow removal in the winter season and application of mosquito control substances during the summer season
  • Responsible for operating a variety of light and heavy equipment
  • Facilitates good communication with other Town staff and the public, which may include sharing information and receiving feedback, listening to and respecting input, participating in work group conversations and directly and respectfully dealing with issues that arise
  • Actively promotes a culture of safety by observing and following all Town and Department safety procedures, regulations and policies and assists in ensuring others do so in order to promote a safe work environment and prevent injuries and illnesses
  • Responds to customer inquiries and complaints as instructed by the Water Foreman 
  • May work in confined spaces that require ventilation to protect against potential noxious gases and fumes
  • Performs a variety of duties that require the use and wear of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
  • Performs routine pre/post-use safety checks of equipment and minor maintenance on vehicles and equipment and maintains records of such activities
  • Responsible for entering and completing work orders in the Public Works work order system
  • May be required to work overtime, be on-call and/or work a varying schedule including weekends and during emergency situations
  • Assists with various Town event and festival set-up and tear-down activities
  • Participates in ongoing training for personal and professional development

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of maintenance, operation, and proper safety protocols of small engine machinery
  • Ability to monitor SCADA (supervisory control and data acquisition) system(s) to ensure the stability, security, and performance of industrial processes.  With support, respond to alarms and abnormalities
  • Ability to read and comprehend a variety of written material, including manuals, maps, instructions and safety information, and to perform common mathematical operations, accurately record numerical data
  • Ability to effectively communicate, both orally and in writing
  • Strong problem-solving skills that include the ability to analyze and resolve a variety of issues and recognize when to escalate
  • Ability to complete daily operations in a competent and safe manner, and perform a wide range of strenuous physical and manual tasks in an outdoor environment
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with management, other employees, and the general public
  • Ability to use standard office equipment, computers, tablets, and software including the basic use of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, GIS mapping and databases
  • Ability to keep workplace clean and organized, equipment clean and serviced, and take care of Town-owned assets appropriately
  • Ability to work both collaboratively and independently

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required
  • Two (2) years previous maintenance is required
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered

Licenses/Certifications:

  • Must possess and maintain a valid Colorado Class B CDL and safe driving record throughout employment
  • Must possess and maintain a Flagger certification
  • Must possess and maintain a Confined Space certification
  • Must possess and maintain a CCWP Class 1 certification in Water Distribution and attain a CCWP Class 2 in Water Distribution within two years of employment
  • Must obtain and maintain a Backflow certification within one year of employment
  • Must obtain within the first year and maintain throughout employment a general Pesticide Applicators License

 
Physical Activities:

Work is regularly performed outdoors and occasionally indoors, with frequent exposure to extreme temperatures and all weather conditions. Work is performed year-round with regular exposure to any of the following: loud noise, heavy traffic, and some hazardous situations. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate with times of increased noise.

Body Movement:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, and use hands to finger, handle, or feel. The employee is frequently required to reach with hands and arms, stand, walk, bend, stoop, or kneel. On rare occasions, the employee may be required to climb, crawl and balance. The employee must be physically able to operate various motor vehicles. An employee is required to be available and on-call at various hours. Employees must frequently lift and move up to 50 pounds.
Vision:
Employees must be able to consistently see with near and far acuity, depth perception, color vision, and field vision.
Hearing:
Employees must have the ability to hear, understand, and distinguish speech and other sounds (e.g., machinery, telephones, alarms); communicate clearly and effectively; understand and be understood; be able to consistently engage in ordinary conversations.
