Description

The Potomac School English Department seeks English teacher candidates for a vacancy in grades 9-12, beginning with the 2025-26 academic year. This is a full-time position reporting to the Head of Upper School.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Manage course load including four classes and a student advisory.
  • Plan, prepare and deliver lesson plans and instruction in a manner that facilitates active, student-centered learning using various teaching methods such as discussions, group activities, and occasional lectures.
  • Work with students to encourage and facilitate each individual’s growth as writers.
  • Teach the assigned curriculum, evaluate students’ progress, inform parents of progress.
  • Keep attendance records; manage student behavior in classroom and maintain a positive educational environment for all students.
  • Meet with parents as needed to discuss student progress and challenges.
  • Participate in faculty and professional meetings, educational conferences, and other teacher training workshops.
  • Demonstrate personal leadership qualities to inspire student learning, including understanding of the characteristics of the age group taught.
  • Work in an organized, dependable, patient, and creative manner.
  • Advise a small group of students by developing meaningful relationships with them and supporting their academic and social-emotional growth.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree required
  • Minimum of two years’ experience
  • Skilled in writing and preparing lesson plans.
  • Ability to communicate, motivate, and understand the students’ educational and emotional needs.
  • Ability to work cooperatively and communicate effectively with other teachers, support staff, parents and members of the community.
  • Ability to recognize and respond to individual and cultural differences in students and use different teaching methods that inspire high student achievement.
  • Enthusiasm and joy for working with students.
