Position Summary

The role of the Certified Scrub Technologist reports to the RN, Clinical Coordinator, Unit Manager, and Director. This position serves as a member of the healthcare team and is under the direct supervision of the Registered Nurse. This position is responsible for maintaining the integrity, safety and efficiency of the sterile field throughout the surgical procedure.

 

Essential Position Responsibilities

  • Maintain an orderly surgical field
  • Prevent contamination of the field by strict practice of aseptic technique
  • Protects self, team members, and environment by following universal precautions
  • Participate in sponge, sharps, and instrument count as prescribed by departmental policy/procedure
  • Stay constantly alert to the safety of the patient
  • Remain knowledgeable about surgical procedures and can anticipate surgeon’s needs and serve as the surgical assistant as required
  • Receives and transfers medications and other prescriptive items on the sterile filed (from a licensed nurse to a surgeon) under the direction of the surgeon and/or circulating RN
  • Prepares specimens for pathology
  • Knowledge of instrumentation shall be maintained at an expert level
  • Other duties as assigned

 

Qualifications

  • Education: Graduate from an accredited scrub technologist program.
  • Licensure and Certifications: CPR required within 90 days. CST, required.
  • Experience: Knowledge of and experience with sterile technique qualify the scrub to prepare and arrange instruments and supplies to facilitate the surgical procedure, required.

 

Work Environment: This position will spend 80% of time standing and/or walking while pushing, pulling, lifting, and/or carrying up to 50 lbs. This position will spend 20% of time sitting while performing work in a standard office environment. This position spends 100% of work time standing and/or walking short distances while frequently lifting, carrying, pushing/pulling up to 100 lbs. This position has exposure to body fluids, radiation and communicable disease. This position serves a culturally and linguistically diverse patient population
