The Senator John Heinz History Center, the Smithsonian’s home in Pittsburgh and the #1 History Museum in America, is currently seeking a Public Programs Coordinator.

This junior level position is a two-year appointment that works closely with the Director of Public Programs to help develop, organize, facilitate, and evaluate all public-facing events at the largest history museum in Pennsylvania. 

The Public Programs Coordinator assists with day-to-day operations and administration of the museum’s programs, providing essential support while working closely with other departments and ensuring a high-quality experience for visitors.

As the nation approaches its 250th anniversary in 2026, this is an exciting opportunity to join the History Center’s award-winning team and assist with the planning and execution of high-profile programs.

This is a full-time, salary, non-exempt position reporting to the Director of Public Programs.

 

Key responsibilities: 

  • Works with Director of Public Programs and Communications Team to plan and execute new public programs that support traveling and long-term exhibitions, collections, and initiatives
  • Assists with on-site coordination of in-person and virtual programming
  • Assists with creation of event forms, floorplans, and other logistical planning documents
  • Works closely with Events team to coordinate setup and breakdown of public programs
  • Assist Visitor Services team with visitor communication and exceptional customer service
  • Assists with program evaluation and the strategic implementation of visitor feedback for future programing

Qualifications

  • Minimum of Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field or equivalent demonstrated work experience.  
  • Preferred: 1-2 years of experience with the development, execution, and evaluation of public-facing events.
  • Ability to work evenings, nights, and weekends as necessary.
  • Multi-tasker who is highly organized, motivated, and detail oriented.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Maintains a positive attitude with a passion for collaboration and exceeding expectations.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite.
