Description:
We are currently seeking a Certified Lactation Consultant to join our Family Birth Center. The Lactation Consultant provides assessment, assistance, and support of infant nutrition, particularly breastfeeding, to infants, adult and adolescent mothers, and families. The Consultant provides education to staff and physicians, as well as to the community. The Consultant works closely with physicians and staff and promotes collaboration and communication. The Consultant participates effectively in the daily operations of both inpatient and outpatient care.
Responsibilities:
- Maintains an in-depth knowledge of principles, practices, standards, and techniques and demonstrates knowledge in accordance with Santiam Hospital and Clinics Family Birth Center policies and procedures within pertinent laws and regulations in the following areas:
- Provide support and encouragement to enable mothers to successfully meet their breastfeeding goals.
- Perform comprehensive maternal, child and feeding assessments related to lactation using current lactation theories and research.
- Develop and implement individualized feeding plan that address individual feeding issues, such as nutritional requirements, in consultation with the mother
- Provide evidence-based information regarding a mother’s use, during lactation, of medications (over the counter and prescription), alcohol, tobacco and street drugs, and their potential impact on milk production and child safety.
- Provide evidence-based information regarding complementary therapies during lactation and their impact on a mother’s milk production and the effect on her child Integrate cultural, psychosocial and nutritional aspects of breastfeeding into lactation encounters, feeding plans and follow up care.
- Use effective counselling skills when interacting with clients and other health care providers.
- Use the principles of family-centered care while maintaining a collaborative, supportive relationship with families and care providers.
- Remain current with practice of lactation consulting and professional development.
- Learn new use of adaptive devices, safety information, etc. to provide a safe patient care environment.
- Thorough and timely lactation encounter documentation and billing.
- Other duties as assigned within the lactation consultant’s scope of practice.
