Summary:
Vighter is seeking dedicated and qualified Medical Laboratory Technicians (Lab Tech) at Fort Eisenhower, GA. Lab Techs Independently perform standardized clinical laboratory tests and procedures appropriate to blood banking. The majority of work performed is covered in established standard operating procedure (SOP) and instructions, though occasionally will perform more complex procedures which are not covered in detail by existing documents. Maintains a professional attitude and communicates effectively with donors, patients, physicians, and fellow employees.
Key Responsibilities:

***MUST HAVE CERTIFICATION {OR} BE WILLING TO BE CERTIFIED AS A MEDICAL LABORATORY TECHNICIAN (MLT) FROM ASCP OR AMT TO QUALIFY!***
- Performs personal interviews to obtain medical histories and visual inspections of blood donors, ensuring donors meet all Food and Drug Administration (FDA) criteria and current manufacturing practices.
- Determines eligibility of potential donors based in accordance with SOP and regulatory guidelines. Screens subjects donating blood (e.g., volunteer blood donors, autologous and therapeutic patients) and exercises care to ensure their blood is at a safe level prior to being used. Takes vital signs (i.e., temperature, pulse, and blood pressure) and checks hemoglobin and/or hematocrit levels, ensuring prospective donors are eligible to donate blood.
- Strips, segments, weighs, and stores whole blood units. Prepares samples to be sent to testing laboratory. Tests as required and submits electronically, ensuring proper procedures are followed if irregularities or tests discrepancies are found. Enters results into the computer system to update the files of blood donors and follow up log for serological testing of blood donor units. Inputs all data on the blood products in the computer system to ensure proper release and inventory of products. Labels units for shipment or storage in accordance with SOP to ensure accuracy and appropriateness of the release and use of the blood product.
- Manufactures packed red blood cells, platelets, fresh frozen plasma, and recovered plasma in accordance with SOP. Maintains records on component preparations. Performs quality control tests for red blood cells, platelets, and instrumentation in accordance with SOP.
- Perform a full range of clinical laboratory tests in any one or a combination of the: hematology and blood bank. Determine the suitability of specimens for analysis. Prepare specimens for analysis and ensure that the physiologic state of the properties is maintained. Prepare reagents and primary reference materials as necessary. Calibrate, standardize, adjust, and maintain instruments. Recognize and react to malfunction indicators. Locate and implement corrections.
- Obtain analytical data, convert to a prescribed unit of reporting, as necessary, and correlate data to verify results. Conduct quality control procedures on equipment, reagents and products and maintain proper records for quality control and quality assurance reports. Prepare specimens for transport to MTF laboratory or for mail out. Prepare biological waste for proper disposal.
- Apheresis procedures: Processes human volunteer apheresis donors. Takes donor history, temperature, pulse, blood pressure, hemoglobin, and collection of single donor plasma and single donor platelets using apheresis equipment and standard procedures.
Qualifications:
- Certifications in addition to Basic Life Support (BLS).
- Board Certification Certification/ registration as determined by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or American Medical Technologists or other agency approved by the Assistant Secretary Defense-Health Affairs (ASD-HA.)
Experience & Education:
- Certificate. Graduate from a medical laboratory technician training program accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS) or the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES) or educational program acceptable to the American Medical Technologist (AMT).
- 1 (one) year of experience as a Medical Laboratory Technician.

Duty Hours / On-call Requirements:
- Generally speaking, this is a day shift position with duty Monday - Sunday (availability is between the hours of 0400 to 2200) as needed.
- Normal shifts are 8 hours, and blood drives are 8-12 hours depending on travel time to donation location.
- No travel is required for this role.

Physical Requirements:
- Must be able to sit for more than 8 hours per day.
- Must be willing to work overtime if necessary.
- Must be able to use an elevator or walk up and down stairs.
- Must be able to lift up to 40 lbs. and carry up to 10 feet.
- Must be able to routinely grasp or handle objects, use finger dexterity, bend elbows/knees and reach above and below shoulders.
- Must be able to read and interpret handwritten and typewritten print.
- Must be able to communicate by voice and detect sound by ear.
- Must be able to perform duties in an indoor or outdoor environment.
- Must be able to pass a criminal background investigation.
- Must undergo Urine Drug Testing (UDS).
