Description

The First Assistant Superintendent is responsible for oversight of daily maintenance and management and agronomic practices of the golf course and adjacent grounds, including but not limited to the clubhouse landscaping and maintenance complex. This position reports to the Director of Agronomy and helps oversee the department's Greenskeepers. 

DUTIES INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO THE FOLLOWING:

  •   Oversee daily maintenance of the golf course, including greens, trees, fairways, rough, and bunkers.
  •   Develop and implement agronomic programs for turf grass management, including fertilization, pest control, and irrigation.
  •   Manage water usage and conservation efforts in compliance with California water regulations.
  •   Supervise and train groundskeeper and grounds maintenance staff.
  •   Schedules, trains, and evaluation of all personnel assigned to the department.
  •   Plans professional development and training activities for subordinates.
  •   Supervise all landscape features on property.
  •   Supervise all buildings that store golf course equipment.
  •   Coordinate and assist with the preparation and management of the annual budget for course maintenance.
  •   Coordinate with club management and golf operations professionals to ensure course playability and tournament readiness.
  •   Implement and maintain safety protocols for staff and golfers.
  •   Stay current with industry trends, technologies, and best practice in golf course management.
  •   Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations regarding pesticide use and environmental protections.
  •   Maintain equipment and management of inventory supplies.
  •   Maintains accurate records of all maintenance practices on the golf course.
  •   Selects and prepares all fertilizers and nutrients for all plant life on property.
  •   Maintains and develop all irrigation and drainages for property.
  •   Maintains proper personnel files for department.
  •   Communicated effectively and respectfully with our department managers on course conditions, facility conditions, maintenance plans, and scheduled events.
  •   Ensures proper use, storage, disposal and recordkeeping of all chemical, petroleum, and other controlled substances.
  •   Attend staff and management meetings.
  •   Attend workshops, shows, conferences, and other educational programs to maintain a current knowledge of technical and turf innovations that could affect department operations.
  •   Prepares and revises the grounds manual.
  •   Establish objectives, goals and key performance indicators for the department and golf courses, both short term and long term.
  •   Oversees all course construction.
  •   Conducts daily facility and security checks ensuring accurate inventory of equipment and keys.
  •   Assists with snow removal.
  •   Other duties as assigned.

Because of the fluctuating demands of the Club’s operation, it may be necessary that each employee perform a multitude of different functions; therefore, as an essential part of your job, you will be expected to help others when the occasion arises, just as other employees are expected to help you. Accordingly, you may be expected to perform other tasks, not specifically addressed above.

 

Qualifications

Education/Experience/Certificates/Licenses:

  •   A college degree in Turf Management, Horticulture, Agronomy or related field is preferred.
  •   Minimum five years as a golf course second assistant or assistant superintendent.
  •   PGA Tournament preferred, but not required
  •   California Qualified Applicator License or ability to obtain within six months.
  •   California Pesticide License or ability to obtain within six months.
  •   Bilingual in English & Spanish is a plus.
  •   GCSAA Member or apprentice preferred, but not required.
  •   Knowledge of budgeting and expense management strongly desired
  •   Strong leadership and communication skills.
  •   Must possess a valid driver’s license.
  •   Knowledge of agronomy, turf grass science and the rules of golf
  •   Experience with water conservation practices and California-specific environmental regulations.
  •   Must possess basic computer skills – Word and Excel
  •   Must possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  •   Must be extremely organized, efficient and detail oriented.
  •   Must be highly motivated, goal driven and self-starter.

Language/Communication: Ability to read and speak English is required in order to perform the duties of the job (e.g. the associates may be required to communicate with English speaking customers or co-workers, the manuals for the equipment the associates may use are in English). Must be able to work as part of a team and maintain open communication with managers and fellow coworker. Must display professional demeanor and communicate in professional language at all times.
