POSITION SUMMARY

The Breastfeeding Coordinator is responsible for planning and coordinating local breastfeeding promotion and support activities including breastfeeding related components of the nutrition education plan. This individual will prepare and/or evaluate breastfeeding education and prepare/deliver breastfeeding training to local agency staff. The breastfeeding coordinator will play a key role in breast pump issuance throughout the local agency.

Qualifications

ESSENTIAL SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Designated breastfeeding expert. Credentials of an IBCLC (International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant) required
  • Minimum of one (1) year experience providing breastfeeding counseling
  • Certification to perform cardiopulmonary Resuscitation for the Health Care Professional (CPR) and AED through courses that follow the guidelines from the American Heart Association and Red Cross (cognitive and skills evaluations)
  • Valid Level One Fingerprint Clearance Card issued by the Arizona Department of Public Safety for all specialty behavioral health locations or ability to obtain within 30 days of employment
  • Prioritization and multi-task skills are required
  • Competency in working with people of various cultures
  • Ability to perform a variety of assignments requiring considerable exercise of independent judgment

 

POSITION REPONSIBILITIES

  • Oversee the planning, implementation, and evaluation of the Local Agency breastfeeding activities
  • Train new staff regarding their role in breastfeeding promotion and support
  • Assess staff breastfeeding educational needs and comfort levels and develops individual staff training plans and training based on identified gaps in education on/or comfort level; ensures staff are properly trained
  • Provide ongoing supervision and support of Local Agency staff regarding breastfeeding
  • Follow up with participants as needed if staff have identified a participant need or request that is out of their scope of practice (breastfeeding complications- 602/603 risk codes)
  • Keep current with up to date breastfeeding information and disseminates this as well as FNS-provided information to other Local Agency staff
  • Identify, coordinate, and collaborate with community breastfeeding stakeholders
  • Monitor Local Agency breastfeeding rates to identify trends and areas for improvement
  • Oversee breast pump issuance for Local Agency; ensures breast pump issuance is logged correctly and breast pump inventory is monitored
  • Attend annual breastfeeding coordinator meetings and other State meetings as needed
  • Complete quarterly breastfeeding report and quarterly breast pump issuance report; reports results to management team and develops staff training based on results

 

 

NONESSENTIAL SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • A minimum of two (2) years of job-related experience including direct WIC-services
  • Credentials of a Registered Dietitian/ Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RD/RDN) preferred

Physical demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be required to sit for long periods of time, is required to stand, walk, use hands to handle or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb steps/stairs; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; talk or hear; smell; manage stress as it relates to essential job functions.  The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds without assistance and may occasionally be required to lift or move up to 50 pounds with assistance.  Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

 

Work environment: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is exposed to weather conditions prevalent at the time when traveling to various clinic sites.  The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. The employee may be subject to health hazards (contagious diseases, blood borne pathogens, etc.) when working in the clinic area.
