JOB DESCRIPTION

 

Summary/ Objective

ESH currently sponsors three NYC Department for the Aging and DYCD Neighborhood Development Area Initiative funded Older Adult Centers- Melrose Older Adults Center, Patterson Older Adult Center, and Borinquen Court Mitchel Older Adult Center. Under the direct supervision of the Associate Executive Director, the Department Director of Older Adults sits as part of the middle management team and is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Older Adult Department.
 

The Department Director of Older Adult Services will oversee all East Side House Older Adult Services and initiatives. The Department Director of Older Adults will be responsible for planning and outlining department goals, objectives and priorities, quality of programs and services, contract and fiscal compliance, personnel supervision (including capacity building and professional development), and the development and operation of present and future Older Adult Services and Initiatives.

 

Essential Function

Duties and Responsibilities shall include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Assist and support vision and strategy for Older Adult Senor Service Programs.
  • Provide leadership to the Older Adults services management team through supervision, planning, professional development, and capacity building.
  • Facilitate and steward partnerships between the Older Adult Services Team and other ESH Teams, and work to strengthen collaborative relationships with existing and potential external partners.
  • Represent division/agency on city-wide and local coalitions and advocacy groups.
  • Oversee the day-to-day operations of the center.
  • Provide supervision of program staff at Melrose Senior Center and Patterson Senior Center, the sister site.
  • Coordinate and help develop programs for senior participants in the areas of social, cultural, educational and recreational activities (at least one group activity a day or twenty group activities a month must be planned and carried out in compliance with D.F.T.A. mandates).
  • Develop and implement out-reach plans to ensure maximum utilization of center.
  • Recruit volunteer workers (We Care, Maturity Works, Senior Companion, NYCHA and others).
  • Serve as a liaison with community and neighborhood groups that can assist in the process of advancing senior citizen issues.
  • Ensure contract compliance as outlined by program work plans and contracts.
  • Prepare and submit all program reports to the Department Director in a timely fashion (i.e. monthly level, box money, payroll sheets and attendance; prepare, submit, and review all required center reports).
  • Promote senior citizens participation and involvement in the advisory board, grievance committee, other such committees, and the center.
  • Assist in registering new participants in the program.
  • Provide case assistance services to seniors (i.e. supportive contact, referrals, benefits and entitlement assistance, immigration assistance, advocacy).
  • Assist in the development of program resources.
  • Other duties as required.

Qualifications

Requisite Education & Experience

  • Bachelors’ degree preferred with at least two years experience in human services, or Associate degree with three years of experience; or High School Diploma/GED with at least 4 years of experience.
  • Strong presentation skills and ability to represent the organization in dialogues with other agencies and community meetings.
  • Excellent skills in verbal and written communication.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of community service/development.

Work Environment

Business casual. This job operates in a school office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.
 

Expected Work Schedule

This is a full-time position. Monday through Friday, for an 8-hour day and occasional weekends and holidays. Days and hours of work will range within and to cover the shift of operations from 6:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Days/hours subject to change based on ESH’s program needs. Summer hours are subject to change, only as per DFTA’s request.
 

Remote Work

This position is not eligible for remote work. Availability and visibility on site for staff and clients is essential to the success of the operation.

Travel

Minimal travel between sites is expected for this position.
 

Physical Demands

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. This is generally a sedentary role; however, some filing and site visits are required. This would require the ability to lift files, open filing cabinets and bend or stand on a stool as necessary.
