POSITION SUMMARY:
The Controller will be a key member of our leadership team, responsible for overseeing the financial operations of the organization and ensuring the accuracy, transparency, and integrity of all financial records. This role involves managing the accounting team, preparing timely and accurate financial reports, and collaborating with leadership to develop strategic financial plans that align with and support the organization’s mission and goals. The ideal candidate will bring extensive experience in nonprofit accounting, exceptional analytical skills, a proactive approach as both a leader and hands-on contributor, and a strong commitment to upholding the highest standards of ethical financial management.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:
Financial Management
- Oversee all aspects of the organization’s financial operations, including budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning.
- Develop and enforce financial policies and procedures to ensure compliance with applicable legal and regulatory requirements.
- Prepare and present accurate, timely financial reports to the executive team, board of directors, and other key stakeholders.
- Monitor cash flow and manage investments to maintain the organization’s financial health and stability.
- Coordinate the annual audit process, collaborating with external auditors to ensure accurate and timely completion.
Accounting and Reporting
- Lead and manage the accounting department, including recruiting, training, and supervising staff.
- Ensure the timely and accurate processing of all financial transactions, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, and payroll.
- Maintain the general ledger, ensuring the integrity, accuracy, and completeness of all financial records.
- Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
- Ensure compliance with all relevant federal, state, and local tax regulations and reporting requirements.
Strategic Planning
- Partner with the executive team to develop and execute long-term financial strategies and plans.
- Provide financial analysis and insights to guide organizational decision-making and support strategic initiatives.
- Identify opportunities for cost optimization and revenue growth, contributing to the organization’s sustainability.
- Support the development and execution of fundraising strategies and campaigns through financial planning and analysis.
Internal Controls and Risk Management
- Design, implement, and maintain a system of internal controls to protect the organization’s assets and ensure the accuracy and integrity of financial information.
- Conduct regular risk assessments and implement strategies to mitigate financial risks.
- Ensure compliance with both internal policies and external regulations, maintaining high standards of financial integrity.
- Provide training and support to staff on financial policies, procedures, and best practices.
Stakeholder Relations
- Serve as the primary point of contact for financial matters with the board of directors, donors, grantors, and other stakeholders.
- Prepare and present financial reports, forecasts, and analyses to the board of directors and finance committee.
- Foster open communication and transparency with internal and external stakeholders to build trust and accountability in financial matters.
