About the Position:

The Food Services and Wellness Manager is responsible for ensuring that clients in shelter receive safe, nutritious meals that promote the re-stabilization of their lives. The Manager leads the food service team and acts as the point of contact for all food-related services. The Manager coordinates with internal and external partners to secure, transport, and serve appealing, nutritious food to homeless families and individuals. The Manager coordinates with internal and external partners to expand the nutrition and wellness programming offered through LifeMoves programs to support homeless families and individuals to improve their health and their quality of life.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Oversee the procurement, transport and service of appealing, nutritious meals to clients in shelter.
  • Manage a team of food service professionals to efficiently meet the agency’s food and wellness goals, including the improvement of the quality of meals offered to clients in shelter. Hire and train new food service team members. Promote the growth and development of the food service team members. Provide support for food service team members to improve their performance as needed.
  • Continuously improve the quality and presentation of food and meals provided at agency sites based on client feedback and nutrition science.
  • Regularly monitor agency kitchens and food storage facilities for food safety and compliance with applicable regulations. Prepare sites to pass inspections from outside agencies including SHFB, the Veterans’ Administration, County and City inspections. Manage the relationship with vendors that assist in the maintenance of the agency’s commercial kitchens.
  • Coordinate with the Development Team to understand volunteer meal providers who offer client meals. Maintain positive relationships with large volunteer groups.
  • Manage the food and wellness budget, review and approve food/supply invoices, and track expenses in accordance with approved budgets and vendors.
  • Oversee inventory of food and supplies at sites, including ordering and special shopping with the Second Harvest Food Bank and established vendors
  • Serve as agency contact for Federal, State, County, and City food-related health and safety regulations to communicate updates and participate in any related inspections.
  • Ensure food safety standards are upheld at all sites. Provide food safety training for staff.
  • Establish and maintain good relationships with community partners including Second Harvest Food Bank, UC Extension, YMCA of Silicon Valley, Loaves & Fishes, and faith-based volunteers.
  • Contribute to agency emergency readiness by providing expertise to Safety regarding emergency food and water supplies for all sites. Make recommendations to senior leadership as needed.
  • Collaborate with internal teams including Operations, Maintenance, Development, Education, Security, and senior leadership to advance food and wellness goals.
  • Regularly visit food preparation kitchens, commercial kitchens, and dining areas for proper food storage/handling and cleanliness
  • Check staff logs and visually inspect kitchen equipment to arrange for regular maintenance and servicing either internally or outsourced.
  • Support Development team efforts to secure funding for meal service activities.  Attract and retain regular community meal partners through positive volunteer experiences.
  • Collect feedback from clients and staff on the quality of food/meals and work with Programs on necessary recordkeeping regarding meals served.
  • Identify opportunities to advance the agency mission to help clients re-stabilize their lives including new partnerships to improve the quality of meals provided, partnerships to create culinary training for clients, and partnerships to implement effective nutrition and wellness programming.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in nutrition or business administration. Master’s degree preferred.
  • Registered Dietitian a plus
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience in management of institutional or commercial food service operations
  • Experience with the Federal Nutrition Programs including Women Infants and Children (WIC) Program, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), School Meals, Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) or Summer Food service Program (SFSP) preferred.
  • ServSafe Manager Certification, or completion of course upon hire
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills. Strong customer service background.
  • High level of accountability and attention to detail
  • Confident computer skills including Microsoft Office
