General Role and Function:

Responsible for assisting with the planning, execution, and supervision of group activities for clients with Alzheimer’s disease or related Dementia. Direct work with clients during group activities to encourage participation, achieve engagement and address their needs. Working directly with the Activity Director to develop the monthly calendar of activities. Additional administrative support is needed. This position is responsible to the Senior Activity Director.

 

Key Tasks and Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for implementing the scheduled program and activities.
  • Assist in setting up client activities and helping to maintain a warm and nurturing atmosphere.
  • Document clients’ attendance and participation in activities.
  • Provide input on client’s progress and participation to the Senior Activity Director.
  • Maintain visual contact with the clients and provide safety through appropriate behavioral interventions.
  • Report any client behavioral concerns to the Senior Activity Director immediately.
  • Provide personalized care to assist clients with activities of daily living.  
  • Inform the Senior Activity Director to order supplies as needed.
  • Adhere to the policies and procedures of the organization.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Senior Activity Director.   

 

Qualifications and Education Requirements:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) and the ability to read and write in Spanish strongly preferred.
  • Certified Nurse Aide strongly preferred and experience working with the elderly or people living with dementia.  
  • Must be able to use reasoning abilities to manage multiple tasks simultaneously and prioritize duties and assignments effectively.
  • Must be able to relate in a positive and warm manner to the elderly and to understand the issues of confidentiality.
  • Sensitivity to the needs of people living with dementia and their families.
  • Must have reliable, personal vehicle and a valid driver’s license, good driving record, and applicable insurance coverage required by the organization policy.
  • Team player with the ability to work independently.

Physical requirements:

  • Limited amount of time spent during the day. Must be able to stand for long periods of time without breaks.
  • Able to move about freely while assisting clients with tasks, activities, and movement.
  • Works in a highly stressful environment dealing with a wide variety of challenges and diverse client population.
  • Able to speak with and understand directions and questions in a quick manner. This may include communicating with a client that speaks slowly, softly or with a slurred speech pattern.
  • Able to assist clients with transfers from sitting to standing and assist in walking.
  • Able to occasionally lift up to twenty-five (25) pounds to move office supplies or other equipment.
