WHAT WILL BE YOUR IMPACT AND EXPERIENCE AT CAMP:

  • Provide expert guidance and instruction in a range of team sports to camp staff and campers, fostering skill development and a passion for sport and physical activity.
  • Create an inclusive and supportive learning environment where campers feel comfortable learning new sports, practicing sport-specific skills, taking risks, and becoming stronger athletes.
  • Provide support and guidance to other sports specialists and counselors to help them incorporate sports games and skill-based activities into their daily schedule.
  • Prioritize the safety of campers during sports activities, implementing and enforcing safety protocols and guidelines.
  • Acknowledge and celebrate campers' achievements and milestones in our sports activities, fostering a sense of accomplishment and pride.
  • Foster a sense of responsibility and awareness among campers regarding safety guidelines and procedures.
  • Serve as a positive role model, embodying the values of respect, cooperation, and enthusiasm for learning and personal growth.



Compensation Range:

This is a seasonal position based in areas of New York City and Westchester. Sports Heads must be available to work limited hours during May and June to complete pre-summer work expectations (~4-5 hours per week). Sports Heads must be available to work full time from late June to the end of August to fulfill their summer camp responsibilities.

Pre-Summer Compensation:

  • Monthly stipends & Pre-Summer Training Stipend
    • June: $150 pre-summer stipend
      • Sports Heads only receive the full pre-summer stipend in June if they complete the required training and sports programming preparation from May-June
        • Rates will be prorated depending on progress
    • In addition, you will receive a training bonus for for June contingent upon attendance
      • Pre-summer training stipend: $355
        • $120 for virtual trainings ($30 per training session)
        • $180 for all 3 on-site training days ($60 per day)
        • $55 for an in-person field day in June
      • Training attendance is mandatory; you will only be paid for the trainings that you attend / complete on time.
      • You must complete all virtual and in-person training.

Summer Compensation:

Sports Heads are paid a weekly salary rate for working 5 days per week during the summer camp season. The salary rate will be in the range of $700 - $850 per week.

Note: Individual pay rates are based on camp enrollment (number of campers per week) and prior years of experience in similar roles and prior sports-related experience.

  • Pay Schedule: Biweekly salary payments from July - August 2025
    • Riverdale, Inwood, UES Carnegie Hill, Yorkville, East Village, West Village, and Greenpoint will run for 8 weeks
    • Park Slope, Fort Greene, Westchester-Crestwood and UWS camp locations will run for 7 weeks
  • Total salary range based on 8 weeks of summer camp:
    • $700 to $850 per week
      • 8 week camp salary range (without the training stipend)
        • $5,600 to $6,800
  • Total salary range based on 7 weeks of summer camp:
    • $700 to $850 per week
      • 7 week camp salary range (without the training stipend)
        • $4,900 to $5,950

Our ideal candidate would meet some or all of the following qualifications:

  • A candidate who is truly amazing with children!
  • Possess 2 to 3 years of experience in large group sports instruction, preferably in sport-specific classes and physical education programs
  • Strong to very strong proficiency in our Core Sports
    • Whiffle Ball, Soccer, Pickleball, Track & Field, Football, Basketball, and Volleyball
  • Advanced PE teacher experience preferred
  • Ability to communicate effectively and maintain positive working relationships with staff, participants, and caregivers
  • Demonstrate practical scheduling and problem-solving skills in a variety of situations

Summer Camp Employment Requirements:

  • Authorization to work in the United States.
  • Up-to-date medical statement / physical exam and TB test documentation must be submitted prior to the camp start date.
  • You must pass local, state, and national criminal background checks and sex offender registry checks.
  • Being CPR, First Aid and AED certified is a plus.
  • Knowledge of another language on top of English is a plus.

Qualifications

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR:

Kids in the Game is looking for a Sports Head to work in our summer day camps and be the primary organizer and facilitator of our core sports programming (Basketball, Soccer, Whiffle Ball, Pickleball/Tennis, Volleyball, and Track & Field). The Sports Head would report directly to the Programming Assistant Director and be responsible for leading daily sports classes, as well as supporting other sports’ classes being led by sports & games specialists and camp counselors.

The Sports Head must have prior experience coaching in our core sport areas with an intermediate level of coaching proficiency in each sport and a strong foundation in the coaching principles, including knowledge of basic and intermediate sport-specific skills, terminology, and rules for gameplay, as well as the ability to create weekly progressions to promote skill development over an 8-week camp period. If they haven’t coached a specific sport, the Sports Head must possess the ability to apply intermediate to advanced coaching skills to learn the foundations of the sport, gameplay rules and age-based adaptations, build skill progressions and lessons, and lead camp-wide sports activities and tournaments. They will be responsible for building a daily and weekly schedule of core sports instruction for all campers, and the overall operation of the Sports Program at their camp site, including activity adaptations, implementation, and safety management.

Beyond daily sports instructions, the Sports Head is responsible for creating an atmosphere of fun and learning and serves as a role model to youth and counselors while providing safe and age-appropriate sports education. In addition to a strong background in coaching the core sports, potential candidates must possess a high level of communication, organization, and leadership skills. They must be responsible, dependable, adaptable, and be a team player. They must be able to commit to being physically present on a daily basis to administer the core sports programming.

  • Participate in a series of pre-summer orientation and training sessions, including:
    • 4-5 hours of virtual orientation and core training
    • Sports Head specialized training
    • 3 days of on-site training during the week before camp starts
    • 1:1 sessions with Camp Director / Programming AD to review sports programming schedule & lesson plans
  • Design and implement age-appropriate beginner to intermediate level sports activities in our summer camp core sports: Whiffle Ball, Soccer, Pickleball, Track & Field, Football, Basketball, and Volleyball.
    • Lead daily sports classes for children ages 4-11, including 5 instructional periods per day (45 minutes per period), daily prep period, and weekly observations of other sports classes
    • Incorporate activities and drills to work on specific skills relevant to each sport, such as passing, dribbling, throwing, catching, volleying, etc.
    • Adapt sports sessions to accommodate children with diverse skillsets and interests, including children with limited prior sports exposure or developmental delays
  • Support the Programming Assistant Director in developing structured schedules and lesson plans for core sports to ensure clear progressions are built out for the week for all age groups.
    • Support and mentor the Sports & Games Specialist, providing coaching and guidance to help them lead effective sports and games lessons.
    • Coordinate the setup, maintenance, and storage of sports equipment and facilities on a daily basis; inventory and organize sports equipment
    • Provide feedback to campers to encourage growth in both sports skills and personal development; complete biweekly progress reports
  • Be part of maintaining a safe and inclusive camp space, including:
    • Act as a role model among camp staff, and maintain a positive and professional presence.
    • Ensure a safe playing environment for campers and staff by following safety protocols and inspecting equipment.
    • Work with camp leadership to resolve conflicts and manage camper behavior using positive behavior intervention strategies
    • Promote respect, teamwork, and sportsmanship

Pre-Summer & Summer Work Schedule:

  • Pre-summer Camp Expectations:
    • Participate in virtual and on-site training expectations beginning in Mid-May and continuing through June
      • Sports Head and Specialist trainings (in person and virtual)
      • Virtual trainings starts within the first two weeks of June
      • Onsite training will happen 3 days of the week prior to the first week of your camp start date.
    • Receive a pre-summer stipend at the end of June for delivering on camp sports planning tasks:
      • Review weekly sports plan & alignment with camp theme
      • Review gameplay rules & modifications for core sports
      • Build sports progressions by age group for weeks 1-4
      • Build out plans for weekly tournaments / camp-wide event
      • Coordinate with Programming Assistant Director to map out the sports schedule for the camp season
  • Summer Camp Expectations:
    • Full-time, in-person work at a designated camp site for a camp with 60+ campers and 20+ staff members over a 7 or 8-week period during the summer
    • Require Availability: June 14 – August 22, 2025
      • Includes pre-camp training & 7 to 8 weeks of camp
    • Daily Schedule: Monday – Friday (7:45a – 4:15p)
      • Supporting at least one day per week of aftercare until 5:30pm
