WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR:

Kids in the Game is on the lookout for enthusiastic Assistant Directors at 9-10 dynamic summer camp locations. As the right hand to the Camp Director, you will play a pivotal role in creating an amazing camp culture. Our Assistant Directors will be overseeing summer staff, and providing inspiring leadership to our spirited campers. You will be creating an atmosphere that's not just supportive and safe but fun and exciting too! 

Our Programming Assistant Directors will be second-in-command to the Camp Director and responsible for developing the camp programming. You will help with creating the daily structure of the camp schedule and each lesson for the day. You will make sure the counselors and specialists are on task and participating during activities to ensure camp runs smoothly. 

  • Provide enthusiastic and inspiring leadership to summer staff, ensuring a supportive, safe, and exciting atmosphere for spirited campers.
  • Attend orientations and actively contribute to the preparation of campsite outlines, group formulations, and staff assignments.
  • Assist in the preparation of the campsite, conducting staff training, and assuming equal responsibility for general housekeeping tasks.
  • Plan, execute, and coordinate camp activities with detailed communications, schedules, behavioral expectations, and desired outcomes.
  • Review weekly camp theme guides to learn about the theme and participate in themed events, including dressing up to match the theme.
  • Ensure that all program equipment and supplies are ordered, available and properly maintained.
  • Observe camper behavior, assess appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations, emergency procedures, and apply positive behavior management techniques.
  • Ensure that campers acquire a sincere appreciation of sports and arts activities, achieving an increased sense of self-esteem, cognitive skills and motor skills.
  • Ensure that camp activities are inclusive and reflect the development of each camper and the goals of Kids in the Game.
  • Support counselors and specialists during scheduled periods by helping to manage the group, give directions, and engage campers in the activity. 
  • Plan and execute weekly theme special events with your camp leadership team.
  • Assist with any special projects on non-off-site days, contributing to the overall success and vibrancy of the camp program.
  • Contribute to daily drop-off and pick-up operations, ensuring a smooth and positive experience for both campers and parents.

Pre-Summer & Summer Work Schedule:

  • Pre Summer Camp Expectations: 
    • Mid May to June (8 to 10 hours per week)
      • Attend specific Assistant Director meetings and check ins with our team
      • Support in completing Assistant Director Duties
        • If you are a Programming Assistant Director:
          • Creating the weekly schedules
          • Preparing for weekly special events
          • Reviewing Camp Theme Guides
          • Connecting with your Specialists and Division Leaders
          • Support in answering parent questions or concerns
        • Support in answering parent questions or concerns
      • Attend Camp Leadership meetings and check ins with your camp team
      • Support in staff retention efforts and touch points with your support staff
      • Support additional camp marketing
        • Connecting with families via call and email
        • Participate in virtual or in-person camp fairs/events in the community and open houses. You will help to promote the camp and answer parent questions at these events.
      • Leadership/All Staff/Camp Site Specific Trainings
        • Programming / Off-site Assistant Director Trainings
          • 2 sessions starting in May
          • Attend training specific to AD duties depending on your role at camp
        • Camp staff must attend a series of scheduled orientations/trainings. These trainings will be held between the dates of Mid May and June 26th, which will include 3 full days of on-site training. 
        • On Site Trainings include:

        • CPR/First Aid/AED Trainings (4 hours)
          • Participate in scheduled CPR/First Aid/AED training. These are required for all Assistant Directors.
  • Summer Camp Expectations:
    • Full time in-person camp leadership support for a camp with 40-60+ campers and 15-20+ staff members
    • June 17 – August 22, 2025 
      • Includes pre-camp training & 8 weeks of camp
    • Monday – Friday (7:30a – 5:00p)
      • Supporting at least one day per week of aftercare until 5:30pm

Compensation Range:

This is a part-time, seasonal position based in New York City. Assistant Directors must be available to work part time from Late April - June (range of 8-15+ hours per week) to complete pre-summer work expectations. Assistant Directors must be available to work full time from late June to the end of August to oversee camp operations.

Pre Summer Compensation:

  • Monthly stipend mid May - June at $250
    • Assistant Camp Directors only receive the full pre summer stipend each month if they complete required milestone expectations
    • Rates will be prorated depending on progress
  • In addition you will receive a training bonus for May to June 
    • Pre summer training stipend: $355
      • $120 for virtual trainings and $180 for all 3 on site training days
        • $55 for an in person field day in June
      • Training attendance is mandatory
      • You must complete all virtual and in-person trainings 
      • Missed sessions or absences will result in a prorate training payment

Summer Compensation: 

  • Biweekly salary payments from July - August 2025
    • Riverdale, Inwood, UES Carnegie Hill, Yorkville, East Village, West Village, and Greenpoint will run for 8 weeks
    • Park Slope, Fort Greene and UWS camp locations will run for 7 weeks
  • Total salary range based on 8 weeks of summer camp:
    • $800 to $900 per week 
      • 8 week camp salary range (without the training stipend)
        • $6,400 to $7,200
  • Total salary range based on 7 weeks of summer camp:
    • $800 to $900 per week 
      • 7 week camp salary range (without the training stipend)
        • $5,600 to $6,300
  • Rates are based on camp enrollment (number of campers per week) and prior years of experience in similar roles and prior Assistant Director experience 

** Additional end of Camp Bonuses will be distributed to camp teams based on camper enrollment and satisfaction ratings from registered families.

Qualifications

Job Requirements:

  • Must have completed a physical exam and TB test within one year of the camp dates, pass NYS and national background checks, and be CPR, First Aid, and AED certified.
  • Possess at least 2 years of professional camp leadership experience – should include experience in youth program development and implementation; summer camp operation; recreational programming; staff supervision; work with youth/teens/families, and parent relations
  • Possess excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Prior experience as a supervisor for youth development after school and summer programs or as an educator in a public / private setting (2+ years) may also meet the requirement for consideration
  • Commit to working part time / remotely during the school year to support camp planning efforts and commit to working eight weeks during the summer.
  • Attend and help lead mandatory Core Trainings and all-staff team buildings, before and during the camp season.
  • Be able to establish and maintain strong working relationships with fellow employees, participants, parents, and caregivers.
  • Communicate in a timely and professional fashion with parents, caregivers, kids and staff across organization-wide communication channels (Slack, Email, Text, Google Calendar, etc.) and be able to interpret and understand both written and oral instructions.
