Description

Family Law Legal Assistant

DeWitt seeks a full-time Family Law Legal Assistant for its Minneapolis, Minnesota office with at least three years of experience. A DeWitt employee must be a team player, detail-oriented, have a proven work ethic, and have excellent communication skills. Savvy technical skills, professionalism, and the capability to manage the workflow of multiple attorneys will make you a well-rounded candidate.

Family law legal assistants at DeWitt are involved in all aspects of family law, completing job duties as assigned by family law attorneys in the practice group. The job duties and responsibilities of legal assistants in family law include:

  • Conduct conflict checks and open new client/matter files in the time and billing system.
  • Provide administrative support to multiple attorneys, including scheduling appointments, court appearances, mediation/deposition hearings. 
  • Handle document reproduction tasks, including printing, scanning, copying, and maintaining client files.
  • Assist with preparing and drafting motions, pleadings, judgments, statements, documents, and other correspondence (e.g., debt and asset lists, witness affidavits, child support worksheets, responsive pleadings, etc.).
  • Assist attorneys and paralegals with discovery preparation, including collecting and organizing documents necessary for the case, preparing trial notebooks, and aiding in trial preparation.
  • Professionally communicate with clients and team members via email and regular mail to resolve questions and coordinate information.
  • Support client billing processes, expense reimbursements, time entry, proofreading, and sending invoices.
  • Provide backup coverage for the receptionist and other support staff as needed.

 

Qualifications

Education Requirements: Associate degree, High School Diploma, GED Equivalent, or industry-specific certifications.

Required Skills

  • Organization and Multitasking: Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Attention to Detail: Ensuring precision in proofreading documents, filing, and meeting deadlines.
  • Communication Skills: Strong written and verbal communication skills for interacting with attorneys, clients, and external parties.
  • Legal Knowledge: Familiarity with legal terminology, court systems, and document requirements.
  • Technical Proficiency: Proficiency in using Microsoft Office Suite, legal tools (e.g., case management systems, e-filing platforms, document management systems), and office equipment.
  • Professionalism: Maintain discretion and confidentiality when dealing with sensitive client and case information.
  • Problem-Solving: Ability to anticipate attorneys’ needs and proactively address issues.

Hybrid Work Model:
Employees are expected to work onsite three days per week and may work remotely up to two days per week, subject to meeting specific eligibility and performance criteria. New employees should be prepared to work on-site five days a week during a four- to six-week onboarding period.
