Position title: Orientation & Mobility Specialist                            Department:  Rehab Clinic - Tulsa, OK                 

Reports to:  Rehab Director                                                              FLSA Classification:  Exempt

Position Summary: Responsible for providing direct and/or consultative services for people with visual impairments. These services enable the clients’ to learn skills necessary to remain safe and independent in a variety of settings.

Essential duties and responsibilities: 

  • Perform functional vision, learning media and orientation and mobility assessments on new referrals.
  • Maintains rehabilitation follow-up program for active and inactive clients.
  • Interpret eye medical reports as they relate to the rehabilitative process.
  • If applicable, contribute to the development of the IEP with goals, modifications, learning styles.
  • Recommend appropriate specialized evaluations as needed, such as low vision, psycho-social, and adaptive physical education
  • Dispenses and maintains educational/rehabilitative equipment and instructs in the proper use thereof.
  • Provide direct and consultative services in a variety of settings including but not limited to clinical, educational, community and home settings.
  • Maintains service file of all Rehabilitation Teaching clients with information/documentation regarding client service planning and progress, and updates central file with information.
  • Compiles appropriate Association reports and submits to the Rehabilitation Director.
  • Maintains contact with other educational, community and state direct service agencies.
  • Works as a team member with other NVO professionals, volunteers, and staff.
  • Assists with recreational therapy programming as needed
  • Provides public education on blindness issues and all aspects of NVO services.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned by the Rehabilitation Director.
  • Must wear all protective equipment required by department.
  • Must follow all company policies and procedures including departmental safety policies.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Qualifications (Minimum education, experience, training, licensure, certification):

  • A bachelor's and or master’s degree from a college or university, plus Oklahoma certification for teachers of students with visual impairments and ACVREP Certification for Orientation and Mobility.
  • The ability to travel between sites.
  • Must have working knowledge of all aids and appliances commonly used in general mobility training of the blind and vision impaired. 
  • Must possess knowledge of electronic travel aids (ETA’S).
  • Basic computer database and word processing knowledge and experience.
  • Must obtain a valid Oklahoma State Driver’s license.
  • Preferred - Experienced being a (TVI) Teacher Visually Impaired Instructor.

 

Physical requirements:

Light Work – Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly (Constantly: activity or condition exists 2/3 or more of the time) to move objects. Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for Sedentary Work. Even though the weight lifted may be only a negligible amount, a job should be rated Light Work: (1) when it requires walking or standing to a significant degree; or (2) when it requires sitting most of the time but entails pushing and/or pulling of arm or leg controls; and/or (3) when the job requires working at a production rate pace entailing the constant pushing and/or pulling of materials even though the weight of those materials is negligible. NOTE: The constant stress and strain of maintaining a production rate pace, especially in an industrial setting, can be and is physically demanding of a worker even though the amount of force exerted is negligible.
