JOB SUMMARY:

The Division of Health, Mathematics and Sciences at Columbia College invites applications for an Assistant Professor in Biology position beginning August 2025 with a strong teaching focus in organismal biology and ecology.

The Biology program is housed in the Division of Health, Mathematics and Sciences. Other programs in this division include Chemistry, Mathematics, Computer and Information Science, Exercise Science and Public Health as well as online majors in Healthcare Administration. The Division offers one graduate program in Health Care Administration. Division faculty are committed to collaborative undergraduate research and have been successful in obtaining outside funding to support these efforts.

This position is a nine-month, full-time, tenure-track appointment. The standard teaching load is twelve credit hours for each of the fall and spring semesters. The candidate must demonstrate the ability to design and deliver courses in a variety of formats, including online and hybrid modalities, and is expected to teach core courses and specialized courses in all introductory level biology courses, Ecology, Biodiversity and other electives based on the candidate's strengths.

Qualifications

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • The candidate is expected to have flexibility in class scheduling to meet the needs of the College. Faculty members are expected to participate in faculty governance and academic program activities and to engage in service as well as scholarship and professional development.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS TO PERFORM WORK:

  • Candidates must have an earned doctorate by the time of their appointment. All required documents must be completed for the application to be reviewed.
  • Preference may be given to applicants with prior college teaching experience and familiarity with Learning Management Systems (LMS) such as Canvas.
  • Must have some familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Ability to plan, organize and prioritize work.
  • Ability to meet schedules and timelines.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; excellent interpersonal skills.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Requires sedentary work that involves walking, standing, lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling some of the time and requires the ability to lift up to 50 pounds and the ability to exert up to 10 pounds of force on a recurring basis or routine keyboard operations.
