Position Overview:

We are looking for a dynamic and proactive individual for the Student Employment Office. The Student Employment Assistant is an essential role that supports the onboarding and compliance processes for student workers and their supervisors. This role involves maintaining accurate records, ensuring compliance with employment requirements, and assisting with orientation logistics. The position requires strong communication, organizational, confidentiality, interpersonal, and attention to detail skills.


Key Responsibilities:

Responsibilities vary by role and may include, but are not limited to:

  • Notify students and supervisors about timecard discrepancies, specifically focusing on missing punches and other timecard errors.
  • Notify students and supervisors about any outstanding compliance items and follow up as needed.
  • Maintain accurate records of employment pending items to comply with internal and external auditing requirements.
  • Conduct follow-up with new student hires to ensure completion of all onboarding and compliance items.
  • Assist with setting up and organizing materials for new hire orientation sessions.
  • Prepare and distribute new hire packets, ensuring all required documents are included.
  • Provide general support during orientation, such as greeting new hires and answering basic questions.
  • Assist with presenting or coordinating introductory sessions if needed.
  • Set up the training room before orientation sessions, including arranging chairs, setting up equipment (e.g., projectors, laptops), arranging water bottles and snacks, and ensuring a clean, welcoming space.
  • Take and edit professional photos for employee ID badges.
  • Provide general support to HR staff, including filing, data entry, or other related tasks.

Required Skills and Attributes:

  • Strong ability to prioritize tasks and manage multiple responsibilities.
  • Attention to detail when maintaining records, preparing materials, and handling compliance documentation.
  • A strong sense of confidentiality.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) or similar software.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with students, supervisors, and HR staff via email, phone, and in-person interactions.
  • Clear and professional writing skills for notifications and follow-up messages.
  • A proactive approach to following up on pending items and resolving delays.
  • Ability to identify and resolve timecard discrepancies or compliance-related issues.

Hours:

Part-time, approximately 0-20 hours per week.


Compensation:

Hourly wage, based on university student employment guidelines.

  • These roles are intended to provide students with a meaningful employment experience that contributes to both their personal and career development.
  • Students enrolled in courses during the semester they are working are FICA-exempt.
  • Students not enrolled in the semester are required to pay FICA taxes.
  • Students are not permitted to work during chapel or scheduled class times.
 

Eligibility/Requirement(s):

  • Experience with Microsoft Excel is preferred
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Must be a currently enrolled student at Charleston Southern University.
  • Must be eligible for Federal Work-Study (FWS). 
  • Must have completed all documentation required by Financial Aid.
  • Must have accepted their financial aid award.

Location: Hunter Reception Center
