Job Summary

The Automation Network Engineer is a hybrid role that will be responsible for designing, implementing, and optimizing solutions for automation systems and the network infrastructure that supports it. This would include switches, routers, firewalls, and other networking devices. The incumbent will have a strong understanding of network protocols, network management and modeling tools, and experience with automation technologies such as Python, Java/JavaScript or similar platforms to enhance network performance, reliability, and scalability. Reports directly to the IT Director and dotted line to the Automation Engineering Manager.

Automation Primary Responsibilities

  • Food Safety is the responsibility of all Ventura Coastal manufacturing employees. All Ventura Coastal manufacturing employees must be aware of CCPs in their area and how to document them appropriately.  All staff must report food safety and quality problems to their immediate supervisor in charge during their shift.
  • Innovate, modify and deploy PLC and HMI software solutions to support operational automation additions and improvements on the plant floor to drive Safety, Quality, Productivity, Line efficiency, and Predictive Maintenance/Cost
  • Measure, monitor and report on control network systems (sensors, pumps, flow meters, load cells, etc.) using Historian and Dream Reports.
  • Streamline the manufacturing process to make it as efficient as possible while maintaining product quality and adhering to internal protocols and external regulations.
  • Test, troubleshoot and manage electrical or mechanical automation.
  • Create and maintain documentation related code.
  • Create, monitor, troubleshoot and escalate as needed alarms, alerts and general exceptions coming from automated equipment.
  • Create, assign, document and maintain Historian tags for analog devices in such a way that adheres to the standard followed before you.
  • Design and develop test automation scripts for new processes.
  • Coordinate repair and upgrade efforts with IT, maintenance and electrical teams.
  • Follow IT Information Security Policies and Procedures such as but not limited to Password, Change Control, Incident Response, Backup and Acceptable Use policies.
  • Work with outside vendors to communicate security standards, monitor work and manage expectations related to their deliverables
  • Partner with Maintenance and other engineers to perform upgrades and other periodic maintenance.

Network Primary Responsibilities

  • Design, deploy, and maintain network infrastructure, including LAN, WAN, and wireless networks.
  • Configure, manage, and optimize network hardware and software, including routers, switches, firewalls, and VPNs.
  • Monitor network performance and troubleshoot issues to ensure minimal downtime and optimal performance.
  • Implement and maintain network security protocols, firewalls, and access controls to protect against unauthorized access and threats.
  • Conduct regular network assessments and provide recommendations for improvements.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure seamless integration of new systems and technologies.
  • Document network configurations, changes, and troubleshooting procedures for reference and compliance.
  • Respond to and resolve network outages and incidents in a timely manner.
  • Stay up to date with the latest networking technologies and trends to ensure the best practices are followed.

Qualifications and Education Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Network Engineering, Automation Engineering or a related field.
  • 5+ years’ experience with manufacturing automated systems, PLC Systems
  • Strong knowledge of Rockwell PLC systems, Ignition Perspective and Wonderware SCADA and Historians
  • Experience with firewalls, routers, switches, and other network hardware from vendors such as Cisco, Juniper, NTron or Fortinet.
  • Understanding of network security best practices, including encryption, firewalls, and access controls.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills and experience working in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Physical Requirements

  • 60% of the time sitting at a computer terminal monitoring engineering activity
  • 40% of the time on the plant floor training employees, monitoring manufacturing automation issues.
  • Occasional climbing of stairs and/or ladders
  • Occasional lifting of 25lbs or more.
