JOB SUMMARY

Under general supervision, employees in this class perform recurring manual duties in connection with the operation of complex heavy motor equipment.   They receive general direction from a supervisor, but are responsible  for  the  safe  and  economical  operation  and  care  of  their  equipment  on assigned tasks.  

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following.  Other duties may be assigned.

  • Regularly drives and/or operates complex automotive equipment which require the CDL-A;
  • Operates heavy duty trucks, or trailer trucks in connection with the transporting or collection of large quantities of materials or heavy duty supplies;
  • Operates heavy duty steam roller, power shovel, front end loader, bulldozer, road grader and other types of heavy equipment;
  • Operates heavy-duty crane at construction sites;
  • Occasionally performs minor repairs on heavy-duty automotive equipment so that equipment will operate efficiently;
  • Operates all types of automotive equipment as necessary;
  • Teaches/instructs lower positions, as directed by the foreman;
  • Order materials and supplies;
  • Runs a crew, as directed by the foreman;
  • Lays out and plans projects and jobs.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND ATTRIBUTES

Thorough knowledge of the operation of heavy duty automotive equipment; thorough knowledge of safety standards of the trade; ability to understand and follow oral and written directions; ability to get along well with others; ability to read, write, understand and communicate in English sufficiently to perform the essential functions of the position; mechanical aptitude; dependability; industriousness; physical condition commensurate with duties of the position.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: At time of appointment, possession of a valid Commercial Driver's License Class A (CDL-A) certified to operate commercial equipment within the boundaries of New York State. It is the responsibility of the appointing authority to ensure that the candidate possesses a valid Commercial Driver's License Class A throughout the course of employment.

Manual Dexterity — The ability to quickly move your hand, your hand together with your arm, or your two hands to grasp, manipulate, or assemble objects.

Near Vision — The ability to see details at close range (within a few feet of the observer).

Oral Comprehension — The ability to listen to and understand information and ideas presented through spoken words and sentences.

Stamina — The ability to exert yourself physically over long periods of time without getting winded or out of breath.

Deductive Reasoning — The ability to apply general rules to specific problems to produce answers that make sense.

Dynamic Strength — The ability to exert muscle force repeatedly or continuously over time. This involves muscular endurance and resistance to muscle fatigue.
