The Opportunity: Chief Financial Officer

SJCS is seeking a strategic, mission-driven Chief Financial Officer (CFO) to join our executive leadership team. The CFO will lead financial strategy and operations for our $55M organization, partnering with the CEO, Deputy CEO, Board of Directors, and senior leadership to ensure long-term financial health and sustainability.

In this role, you’ll assess and transform financial systems, streamline processes, improve forecasting, and optimize resource allocation across a multi-jurisdiction footprint. You’ll also play a critical role in guiding SJCS through an evolving funding landscape and helping shape our next chapter of growth.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership & Financial Planning

  • Collaborate with the Leadership Team and Board to align financial strategy with organizational goals.
  • Provide forward-looking analysis to assess future opportunities (e.g., managed care, eldercare, mergers).
  • Lead long-term financial planning, investment strategy, and scenario modeling.
  • Serve as a strategic thought partner to guide growth and operational transformation. Evaluate and advise on short and long-term impact of strategic initiatives including new programs and services.

Financial Operations & Compliance

  • Oversee accounting, budgeting, forecasting, audits, and reporting in accordance with GAAP.
  • Maintain effective internal controls and ensure compliance with federal, state, and funding authority regulations.
  • Lead the annual budget process, including capital planning and performance analysis.
  • Manage cash flow, receivables, billing, and vendor relationships.
  • Monitor and advise on cash and investments.
  • Responsible for enterprise risk management

Team Leadership & Capacity Building

  • Direct and develop a the Finance and Accounting team, providing coaching, mentoring, and performance management.
  • Build financial literacy across departments through training and cross-functional collaboration.
  • Partner with regional directors to support program budgeting, cost control, and revenue generation.

Systems & Technology

  • Integrate financial systems with organizational platforms to streamline operations.
  • Implement technology solutions to improve reporting, efficiency, and data visibility.

Monitoring & Reporting

  • Deliver timely and accurate financial statements, dashboards, and analyses for leadership and Board review.
  • Facilitate and manage Board Finance and Audit Committees
  • Report on key metrics including billable activity, FTEs, and cash flow.
  • Conduct internal audits and lead regional financial monitoring.

Preferred Qualifications

 

  • 15+ years of senior financial leadership, ideally in a complex, multi-service nonprofit or healthcare setting.

  • Experience with Medicaid funding, managed care, or intellectual/developmental disabilities services is a plus.

  • Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, or related field required; CPA or MBA strongly preferred.

  • Demonstrated success managing financial systems, government contracts, internal controls, and compliance.

  • Experience in financial modeling, forecasting, and evaluating new business opportunities.

  • Prior involvement in mergers, acquisitions, or service expansions is advantageous.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills; ability to engage effectively with internal and external stakeholders.

  • Ability to travel extensively.

Work Environment & Requirements

  • May require office-based presence with regular travel to any of the SJCS locations.
