Do you love seeing kids experience wonder and awe in nature? Join our Outdoor Science Team! Do you enjoy working with 5th grade public school students and impacting their lives? Are you interested in teaching and being outdoors? Our relationship based, nature oriented Outdoor Science Program exposes students to the wonder of nature through hands-on science lessons, adventure experiences, and team building. The Naturalist team is a group of Jesus loving outdoor enthusiasts that set aside several months to live in community and join us in our mission.

Position Objective:

The Outdoor Science Naturalist assumes responsibility for a trail group of students and teaching science content for 5th grade during scheduled class times, assists in regular program duties, including team-building and adventure activities, and leads extended activities when outdoor science is in session, as well as additional guest group support responsibilities when outdoor science is not in session (additional support duties with facilities, housekeeping, food service, and adventure recreation; duties as assigned by Supervisor). He/she will be responsible to model a genuine lifestyle of Christian discipleship in a manner consistent with Carolina Creek’s mission, vision, and values.

Naturalists live in an intentional, Christ centered community with one another in shared housing. Staff are invited to join a community built on authentic and hospitable relationships.

Naturalists receive excellent training in curriculum development and experiential education. Ongoing support from the administrative team as well as veteran staff members ensure that staff are “poured into” and supported.

  • Program training starts in January 13–21: Program runs Jan 22 - April 4th

  • Weekly compensation with housing and meals ($265-295)

  • Wed-Fri Naturalist duties, Fri-Sunday/M-T Additional camp duties

Qualifications

Education/Certifications/Licenses

  • Bachelor's Degree preferred in any field of study or equivalent work experience
  • Must have a current valid driver’s license.
  • CPR First Aid Certified prior to start date
  • Lifeguard Certification (or willing to become certified)
  • Current Texas Food Handlers certificate prior to start date

Work Experience

  • Previous experience in leading and facilitating activities.
  • Previous experience with working elementary-aged children.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to relate to a variety of age groups and effectively manage a student group.
  • Ability to provide leadership skills and emotional and spiritual maturity.
  • Ability to articulate the gospel of Jesus Christ as communicated in Scripture and through nature.
  • Passionate about science and the outdoors.
  • Ability to teach in a calm, clear and engaging manner with all ages.
  • Mature understanding of camp guidelines and principles and respect for authority and peers.
  • Ability to adjust and problem solve in challenging situations.
  • Ability to engage in a variety of outdoor activities
  • A heart to serve whenever needed.

Physical Demands:
The physical environment requires the employee to work both inside and outside in hot and humid conditions. Requires sitting, standing, squatting, stooping, twisting, and ability to lift/carry anywhere from 15 to over 60 lbs. and hiking 2-5 miles daily.

  • Adherence to company dress code and professional standards for personal grooming and appearance.
  • Satisfactory completion of background investigation, as well as ability to provide proof of eligibility to work in the United States.
