We are looking for an experienced video editor to edit field footage into completed public television shows that are broadcast ready. This includes the Rick Steves Europe series, specials, pledge events, and lectures. In addition, the editor will help with editing web content, promotional material, or other projects.
The ideal candidate has a deep understanding of public television standards—both technical and editorial. A familiarity with European geography, art, and history is not essential, but an advantage.
This position is full-time, 40 hours/week at our Edmonds office; it is not a remote position.
Responsibilities:
- Ingests and organizes file-based footage into media archive on large NAS media storage system; this involves logging and organizing many hours of footage in preparation for editing (there is no dedicated assistant editor)
- Prepares and backs up media to LTO
- Long form editing: Edits half hour episodes, 1-hour specials, or other broadcast programs from provided scripts
- Accesses and utilizes video from an expansive archive of field footage from European locations compiled over 13 seasons
- Ensures shows meet public television technical specs
- Works with outside technical evaluation company to meet timelines and technical specs for delivery to American Public Television (distributor)
- Selects and inserts appropriate music from the music library to establish tone of sequences and balance with voice-over
- Writes short additions to script, including transitions in the voice of Rick Steves to ensure flow, accurate timing, and appropriate tone
- Edits sequences of exchanges which are not pre-written
- Edits show credits and ‘packaging’ at beginning and end of shows
- Adds graphics when necessary to enhance footage
- Works closely with Rick Steves and the Producer to present a final product that matches their vision
- Makes revisions based on their notes and re-cuts as needed
- Works with multiple outside houses to create ‘graphic opens’ for specials, color-correct for aesthetics and broadcast spec compliance, prepare for VO record, and to mix audio to public television specs and ensure deliverables comply with broadcast standard
- Lays back finalized audio to finished, color-corrected show
- Exports final domestic master and delivers to technical evaluation company for evaluation and closed captioning
- Any other relevant duties and responsibilities as assigned
Qualifications:
- B.S. or B.A. degree: preferably (not required) in Film and Television Production
- 5+ years video editing experience with significant broadcast editing experience
- Competency with Avid Media Composer editing system
- Thorough knowledge of RSE’s travel philosophy, goals, and programming
- European travel experience
- Ability to meet deadlines and manage time effectively
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams, and SharePoint, OneDrive)
- Proficiency in Adobe Creative Cloud suite a plus
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
- Ability to work both independently and cooperatively with a team
- Ability to manage day-to-day technical issues with computers, other hardware, and software (including basic troubleshooting, working with technical support, upgrading software, etc.)
