General Job Description

Supervise, monitor and provide care for youth in a confined, secure facility. Provide direction of juvenile daily activities; monitor and report compliance with facility rules and regulations.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Conduct intake and release procedures with juvenile detainees; screen for appropriateness for admission.
  • Complete all required paperwork for admission and release; complete all body and personal property searches, and notifies supervisor of any specific abnormal behaviors associated with a mental illness, excessive alcohol consumption, delayed development, and/or illegal drug use.
  • From master control room, operate the electronic security system controlling entry/exit through critical doors and permitting only authorized personnel into secured areas. Continuously monitor, via closed circuit cameras, outside facility perimeters and multiple secure areas within the detention facility. Follow agency protocol when security breaches occur.
  • Monitor juvenile activities in detention living units, school, and outside recreational areas. Complete head counts, detainee security checks, progress notes, incident reports, observation reports, maintenance requests; document and log room confinement/ room restriction/ suicide precaution; complete physician request forms as necessary.
  • Perform CPR/First Aid as required upon injury; immediately assess the situation and notify proper authorities for further treatment/evaluation. When authorized, conduct use of physical force within the guidelines of approved agency restraint system.
  • Perform assigned cleaning and laundry duties; assist with lunch and snack distribution; conduct and monitor detainee hygiene process; assist with school activities and phone calls; assist with medication administration process; monitor visitation and ensure all visitation procedures are followed
  • Guide juvenile detainees to effectively channel behavior in a positive manner; models behaviors which demonstrate self-discipline, responsibility, and respect for self, authority and the community
  • Participate and satisfactorily complete all required training/education
  • Perform all other duties, as assigned

Qualifications

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Age:

  • Must be twenty-one years of age or older

Education:

  • High school diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED)

Experience: 

  • 3 months working with youth

Licensure/Certification:

  • Pass OSBI criminal history background
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Obtain CPR/First Aid, Managing Aggressive Behavior (MAB), Medication
  • Administration Technician (MAT) training within 90 days of employment
  • Complete mandated training hours each year

Physical: h

  • Be able to lift & carry up to 50 pounds
  • Full range of body motions
  • Ability to spend 80%-90% of time standing, walking, kneeling and/or reaching to perform office duties;
  • Speech and hearing is required 100% of time in order to communicate with juveniles
  • Sight is required 100% of the time in order to maintain security of the facility and juveniles

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to perform CPR/First Aid and MAB techniques
  • Ability to manage, motivate and control a population of juvenile offenders in a fair, consistent and empathetic manner
  • Reliable and motivated toward helping others
  • Ability to use good judgment, follow guidelines, policies and procedures
  • Ability to work with emotionally disturbed juveniles
  • Ability to communicate effectively
