Primary Work Location: Multisite 

 

Job Summary:  

The Food Services Manager will be responsible for planning, coordinating, and overseeing the nutrition and meal services for Cardea’s 3 sites in Alameda County. This role is critical in ensuring that all meals provided are nutritious and meet the dietary needs and food preferences of our diverse population. The ideal candidate will have a passion for helping others, strong organizational skills, and experience in nutrition or food service management. 

Qualifications & Responsibilities

Menu Planning and Development: 

  • Create and implement weekly menus that are nutritious, well-balanced, and culturally appropriate 

  • Ensure all meals meet the dietary needs of guests, including those with medical conditions and dietary restrictions 

  • Collaborate with healthcare professionals to develop specialized meal plans as needed. 

Food Preparation and Service: 

  • Oversee the preparation and service of meals, ensuring food safety and sanitation standards are met 

  • Coordinate with kitchen staff and volunteers to ensure efficient meal preparation and delivery 

  • Monitor portion sizes and food presentation to maintain high standards of quality

Inventory and Budget Management: 

  • Manage food inventory, including ordering, receiving, and storing supplies 

  • Maintain accurate records of food purchases and expenditures 

  • Work within budget constraints to ensure cost-effective meal planning and preparation 

Guest Interaction and Support: 

  • Address any concerns or feedback regarding meal services promptly and professionally 

Collaboration and Teamwork: 

  • Work closely with care teams and other shelter staff to coordinate comprehensive care for guests 

  • Train and supervise kitchen staff and volunteers, promoting a positive and collaborative work environment 

  • Participate in staff meetings and contribute to program development and improvement initiatives 

  Regulatory Compliance 

  • Stay up to date on food safety regulations

  • Ensure that all food safety regulations are met, including those related to food handling, preparation and storage 

  • Conduct regular self-inspections. Regularly inspect the food service operation to ensure compliance with food safety regulations and to identify areas of improvement 

Pest Control and Waste Management 

  • Create a plan to prevent and control pests, such as cockroaches, rodents and flies 

  • Implement proper waste management that ensures all waste is disposed of properly, including food waste, recyclables and trash 

  • Other duties as assigned 

Required Skills & Qualifications:  

  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in nutrition or food service management, preferably in a healthcare or shelter setting 

  • Strong organizational and time management skills 

  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities 

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with a diverse team 

  • ServSafe certification or willingness to obtain certification upon hire 

  • Must have personal, reliable transportation to and from work sites and shifts 

Preferred Skills & Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor's degree in nutrition, Dietetics, Food Service Management, or a related field preferred 

  • Knowledge of dietary requirements for various medical conditions and cultural/religious food preferences 

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel 

  • Prior experience with homeless or incarcerated populations is desirable 

  • Self-directed and able to work with minimal supervision 

Physical Requirements:  

  • Stand constantly 

  • Walk frequently 

  • Frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds 

Work Environment:  

  • This position will require traveling to other office locations or off-site meetings as required by the job.
