Job Title: Designer I – Pedestrian Circulation

Job Summary:

 

 

The Designer I supports Clients, Consultants, and Associates, develops design solutions, simulation layouts, and simulation outputs, and provides a point of contact and source of information for the client.

 

The Designer also Builds 3D simulation models and develops code to produce results through presentations and reports.

What You’ll Do:

The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed in this position. They are not intended to prescribe or restrict the assignments that management may make.

 

 

 

  • Utilize modeling and drafting software including Revit, AutoCAD and Bluebeam daily.
  • Responsible for assigned projects, including meeting deadlines, estimating time for tasks, managing multiple projects, and accuracy of results.
  • Coordinate project design and drawing delivery with LB Project Managers. Make changes to meet altered needs.
  • Coordinate simulation model layout with Consultant and LB clients and architects.  Coordinate project schedule with Consultant and Design Manager.
  • Collect/organize project specific published pedestrian population information, empirical study data, vertical transportation information, dimensions, and related technical data.
  • Interpret simulation data when provided and apply as required by job task.
  • Download and review Architectural drawings.  Update Consultant on design changes/issues from Client’s design layouts.
  • Document Consultant and Architect conversations, emails, drawings/mark-ups, faxes, etc.
  • Interpret building drawings including structural and architectural plans, elevations, sections, details and design notations.

 

 

What You’ll Bring:

 

 

 

  • Minimum of Associate Degree in Engineering, Computer Sciences, or similar field required.  BA/BS degree preferred.  
  • Advanced computer skills including familiarity with scripting, complex programs, simulation programs. One year programming experience or equivalent college degree preferred.
  • Intermediate Level experience with AutoCAD and Revit is needed. 
  • Common computer skills including MS Office Suite, Outlook email, spreadsheets, word processing, internet, etc.
  • 3D software experience.
  • Knowledge of physics based dynamic software, similar to fluid dynamics software.
  • Experience with architectural drafting and coordination with architects. 
  • Engineering design experience. Electrical engineering design experience is helpful, but only in addition to computer sciences and/or mechanical. 
  • Customer service experience.
  • Knowledge of pedestrian motion or logistics. 
  • Highly organized with ability to adapt quickly to changing priorities.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Ability to develop pseudocode, read programming languages, and develop algorithms for use in simulation software.
  • Resolve and communicate gaps in project workflow with Associates and Consultants.
  • Talent with effectively communicating technical concepts in written and verbal form with coworkers.
  • Capable of independently interpreting a layout and assembling a simulation model based on activities, functions, and processes to develop simulation digital twins.  
  • Competent in taking ownership of any maintenance task i.e., generating training programs, GUI creation, and code development.  
  • Skill to utilize required equipment for field studies.

 Working Environment:


This role involves both physical and mental demands and may be performed in various settings, including offices, construction sites, and confined spaces like elevator pits. Tasks often require frequent movement in multiple directions. Lerch Bates will provide reasonable accommodations upon request through Human Resources.

Physical Demands:
 

This role requires regular sitting, talking, and hearing in meetings and by phone. Employees must navigate tight spaces, climb ladders, move around construction sites, take measurements, and travel by car, air, or rail. Duties may involve working at heights and in confined spaces, using hands for tasks like typing and operating elevator components, and applying up to 30 lbs. of force. Close visual attention is also required.

Mental Demands:
 

This position requires strong written and verbal communication, problem-solving, and analytical skills. Employees must interpret complex information, apply mathematical and logical reasoning, quickly learn new skills, and manage detailed, multitask workloads under shifting deadlines. Regular interaction with executives, colleagues, clients, and external stakeholders is also expected.
