POSITION GOAL:

The Civil Project Engineer ll will coordinate and manage engineering projects. This position will oversee activities related to planning, designing, and overseeing projects such as airports, bridges, buildings, channels, dams, harbors, irrigation systems, pipelines, power plants, railroads, sewage systems, tunnels, and water supply systems. This position will also perform functions, including team coordination, monitoring scope/schedule/budget, invoicing, proposal preparation, staff planning, interdisciplinary coordination, and client interaction.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES - GENERAL

· Possesses foundational engineering concepts.

· Acquires advanced knowledge and skills through mentored experience.

· Evaluates and applies standard techniques, procedures, and criteria to perform assigned tasks as part of a broader assignment.

· Performs work assignments of advanced complexity. Contributes to specific objectives and outcomes.

· Provides instruction on specific objectives and direction on possible solutions to unconventional or complex problems.

· Works as part of a team and coordinates work with others.

· Establishes project work priorities and plans work appropriately.

· Typically receives minimal supervision and is expected to work independently.

· Possesses proficient oral and written communication skills.

· Interacts with both internal project team members as well as direct communication with clients or other stakeholders.

· Adheres to project deadlines and keeps the task manager or client informed of any issues impacting scheduled deadlines.

· Has the primary responsibility for review of project work by other staff.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES – SPECIFIC

· Oversees development of detailed construction plans for roadway, utility, electrical, and transportation projects using Bentley and/or AutoDesk software.

· Coordinates design changes and revisions based on internal and external feedback.

· Communicates regularly with internal design staff and project lead to coordinate the progress of various assignments and adhere to project deadlines. Acts as discipline or project lead. May communicate progress to client.

· Independently manages time and schedule to achieve multiple project milestones.

· Organizes and maintains project files. Leads documentation of correspondence and meeting minutes.

· Evaluates and applies applicable current engineering standards, and federal and/or local requirements to assigned projects.

· Leads the coordination and documentation of quality control reviews throughout the lifecycle of a project.

· Manages tasks and/or projects of moderate to advanced complexity.

· Acts as main point of contact with client or with project lead (on projects led by other disciplines).

 

COMPETENCIES:

•    Ability to prepare schematics & models, perform analysis & engineering calculations, develop plans, specifications & estimates, prepare technical engineering reports for various projects.
•    Assigns project personnel to specific phases or aspects of project, such as product design, preparation of specifications and product testing, in accordance with engineering disciplines of staff.
•    Must possess excellent budgeting and cost containment skills
•    Ability to stay organized and possess extreme attention to detail skills
•    Strong interpersonal, problem solving and analytical skills

 

Qualifications

POSITION REQUIREMENT:

Education: Bachelor's degree from an accredited institute of higher education with a major study in engineering.

Work Experience: Typically 10+ years

Licensure: Professional Engineer (PE) preferred but not required.

Job Classification: Exempt (Salaried)

Report to: Project Engineer – Team Lead

Communication Skills: Advanced level verbal, written, and technological communication skills required.

Technical Skills: Advanced level engineering skills to complement Position Goal. Spatial and design skills to visualize projects in 2D and 3D. Experience with Bentley Suite of products, including MicroStation, ProjectWise, and AutoCAD (Preferred). Knowledge of local government agency standards, specifically IDOT and Illinois Tollway (Preferred).

Supervisory Responsibilities: N/A

Physical Demands: Must be able to sit, walk, stand, reach with hands and arms, stoop or kneel, climb or balance, talk or hear, and use fingers and hands to feel objects, tools, or control.  Must be able to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds on occasion.

Working Environment: A general office environment that may require periods of sitting at a computer. The environmental conditions generally include ambient inside temperature, lighting, and noise level. Due to the collaborative nature of this position and accessibility for in-house meetings, it is important that the work may need to be performed in the office and during normal business hours.  Occasional outdoor work may also be required throughout the year. 

Continuing Education: Complete state-required competency. Attend job-related seminars and workshops.

Salary Pay Range: $115,440 - $124,800
