Compensation range: $230,000–$276,000 per annum

Summary

The Chief Operating Officer (COO) serves as part of the leadership team of two tax-exempt, mission-driven organizations: the Center for American Progress and the Center for American Progress Action Fund, known together as American Progress. The COO must have demonstrated success as an effective leader and manager and will serve as a member of the Executive team, helping guide and implement the strategic vision of American Progress. The COO will also lead in cultivating a high-performing culture while ensuring the success of employees. The COO must be a mission-driven, strategic, and process-oriented leader with proven management skills for all levels of an organization. The COO will manage the Administration Department, which includes the Human Resources, Finance, Information Technology, and Office Services teams.

Responsibilities:

  • Motivate and lead a high-performing leadership team across various functions.
  • Provide counsel and be a resource to team leads in the management of their departments.
  • Ensure the day-to-day operations of the organization are working effectively.
  • Oversee and guide the leadership team in the successful execution of American Progress’ strategic plan, including determining priority projects and initiatives.
  • Collaborate with the management team to develop and implement plans for the operational infrastructure of systems, processes, and staff designed to accommodate the objectives of American Progress.
  • Hold responsibility for the measurement and effectiveness of all internal and external processes.
  • Provide timely, accurate, and complete reports on the operating condition of American Progress.
  • Participate in the formulation and implementation of organization-wide policies and procedures.
  • Oversee various measures of performance for both organizations to ensure resources are utilized in the most effective way.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements and qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required; master’s degree preferred.
  • Minimum of 10 years of relevant professional experience.
  • Experience working with an organization with both a 501(c)(3) and a 501(c)(4) affiliate significantly preferred.
  • Experience with finance operations and materials.
  • Proven management experience in the fields of human resources, information technology, security, facilities management, and finance.
  • Ability to lead a large number of people, with competing priorities and across multiple function areas.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and handle multiple priorities in an efficient manner.
  • Strong organizational and writing skills.
