The NSIP department’s work is driven by American Progress’ mission to improve the lives of all through bold, progressive ideas as well as strong leadership and concerted action, with the aim of not only changing the conversation, but changing the country. American Progress focuses on building connectivity between national security and international policy issues and the organization’s five crosscutting priorities:

  • Building an economy for all
  • Restoring social trust in democracy
  • Advancing racial equity and justice
  • Tackling climate change and environmental injustice
  • Strengthening health

The Senior Policy Analyst will help the NSIP department advance and further develop workstreams tied to these organizational priorities, including efforts aimed at identifying ways to improve human security by addressing underlying causes of migration and fostering sustainable solutions.

The Senior Policy Analyst will help implement a research and advocacy agenda tied to these efforts; develop and write policy products; assist in outreach and coalition-building efforts; and help manage relationships with outside stakeholders, including allied organizations, policymakers, and the media.

The ideal candidate will have excellent research, writing, and analytical skills and a willingness to engage on diverse policy projects. Strong communication skills, attention to detail, and comfort interacting with high-level policy professionals—both internally and externally—are required. Particular attention will be given to candidates with skills and experience applicable to NSIP’s efforts to advance a new model for America’s economic and political competitiveness in concert with democratic allies.

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct and support original research and analysis on American Progress’ priority policy questions, with a focus on migration and its root causes, such as political unrest, climate change, food insecurity, etc.
  • Develop, implement, and manage products, including reports, issue briefs, and columns; op-eds; related events; and other activities to elevate American Progress’ agenda and drive policy outcomes.
  • Coordinate and plan meetings and events.
  • Assist with editorial and communication efforts, including helping build American Progress’ digital presence.
  • Maintain expertise in assigned areas of responsibility and brief American Progress leadership as required.
  • Represent American Progress with the public and outside groups and individuals.
  • Build and maintain relationships across the national security and international policy community, including with U.S. officials in the administration and on Capitol Hill, embassy and foreign government officials, and with allied nongovernmental and policy organizations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements and qualifications:

  • Advanced degree in international relations, history, or other relevant fields; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • At least five years of professional experience on relevant issues.
  • Particular attention will be given to candidates with skills and experience applicable to NSIP’s efforts to advance humane and equitable policies on migration, with a focus on either Latin America and/or Africa. Please speak to this experience in your cover letter.
  • Ability to communicate with diverse policy audiences, including senior government officials, congressional staff, journalists, and the general public.
  • Professional relationships with U.S. and foreign policymakers, advocates, and research community leaders in the national security and international policy community.
  • Strong skills in writing, analysis, presentation, and communication.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work both independently and on a team.
  • Direct international field and/or government service experience is a plus.
  • Ability to perform under tight deadlines and manage many moving pieces and concurrent projects.
  • Ability to travel internationally and experience in planning and supporting international delegations and senior leadership.
  • Demonstrated research and analytical skills.
